Adrien & Diddy’s Hood

Adrien, the French co-owner of Diddy’s Hood, grew up in Egypt and China, where he developed a series of eclectically charming hobbies. A long time ago, while wandering an animal market related to one such pastime—breeding chameleons—he saw a suffering, defensive bulldog, took the puppy home, and spent a decade rehabilitating him. Thus began a lifelong journey that has led to the unique, compassionate business model of Diddy’s Hood.

More of a full-service facility for pets than a mere boarding house, Diddy’s Hood employs a relaxed staff who operate with autonomy, adore animals, and deeply understand the temperament of “man’s best friend.”

The facility, located in the suburbs of Beijing, accepts all sized dogs (provided they are neutered), and features a giant, fenced-in outdoor facility named The Field which provides ample space for animals to run free, and for training to take place.

Diddy’s approach is “dog-first” and seeks a harmonious relationship between owners, pets, and staff. This focus on clear communication necessitates a visit between the pet, owner, and staff before an animal can be left to board for future visits.

The only surprise is how much fun the dogs have.

If the pet has a particularly traumatic past or needs intense intervention, the facility offers a rehab rate that is a bit higher than the standard cost and ensures focused training and extra support. Dogs must be neutered because they spend time together outside, enjoying supervised play, rather than lingering in cages most of the time.

Adrien—an autodidact if there ever was one—has spent years exploring this “full-positive” dog training approach, and now passes on his valuable study to employees. Diddy’s Hood offers site-based and in-home training, led by a staff member who excels in this service after years of mentorship and also offers activities at The Field and training in whatever context necessary.

Most of Diddy’s Hood’s clients are repeat customers and use a top-up model, wherein you purchase a membership card and deduct sums from that as they’re used. Adrien and his staff do everything they can to accommodate customers and their pets – and a lot goes back to that initial meeting between the dog, owner, and staff, where a decision is made to accept a customer on the basis of good fit.

It’s an unusual way to run a business, but the bottom line is compassionate, focused care and transparency between both owners and staff, as well as towards the dogs in their care—an ethos that, in the end, suggests that Diddy’s Hood is a strong choice for those for whom their pet is not just an accouterment on the living room couch, but a true member of the family.
