The Bund: Will you follow Shanghai's symbol ofprogress?

 Hello, my friend!

I'm John Smagula. 」

Hello, my friend! I’m John Smagula. I was just in Shanghai to attend the NBA fan appreciation event and 76ers-Mavericks exhibition game. Temple University partnered with the 76ers 76人for these events, and it was great to get back to Shanghai once again. I stayed at a hotel near the Bund, giving me a chance to steep myself in Shanghai’s past, present, and future.

The Bund is Shanghai’s most famous tourist attraction. Each day, tens of thousands of people walk the 1 km stretch along the Huangpu River, admiring the century-old buildings on one side while marveling at Pudong’s dazzling skyline on the other. Indeed, few places in China allow you to experience the old and the new in one concentrated location.

The Bund, as seen from the Shanghai Center Observation Deck

The Bund

Shanghai’s story is a metaphor for life. From a humble fishing village to the Pearl of the Orient, Shanghai’s progress can inspire us all to follow a similar path.

Over the years, like many tourists, I have walked the Bund. I took photos along the river walk, admired the flower arrangements in the Peace Hotel’s iconic lobby, and climbed at least four skyscrapers across the river to see the Bund from the air. I have jostled with other tourists, waited in lines to see the attractions, and people-watched among the masses.

But the Bund has a deeper meaning, and we can draw inspiration from the tourist experience to help us with our own progress. After all, Shanghai is China’s commercial center, and the Bund is a symbol of Shanghai’s construction and development. What lessons from the Bund can we apply to our own lives?

Hongkong & Shanghai Bank Building(1923)

To answer this question, I decided to take a closer look this time. I took several walks along the Bund: early in the morning, late at night, in the sun, and in the rain. I ascended the Shanghai Center, seeing the Bund from the 118th floor observatory—the world’s highest. I read the plaques on the buildings, talked to locals and tourists alike, and read up on some of the history.

Empire of the Sun

Empire of the Sun, directed by Steven Spielberg, is the first modern Hollywood movie to be filmed on the Bund. The story centers on the 1941 Japanese invasion and removal of British citizens living in Shanghai to an internment camp.

And in the end, I came away from the experience learning just as much about life as I did about the Bund. So, here are some thoughts:

01

Your past can be reinvented to benefit your future

There are 22 remaining heritage buildings on the Bund, and I focused on seven buildings in the central stretch. Many of the buildings are no longer used for their original purposes. The former Chartered Bank Building (1923) is now an entertainment complex. The former Palace Hotel (1906) is now an artists’ residence and gallery.

Former Palace Hotel (1906)

The former Palace Hotel hosted Sun Yat-sen’s victory celebration in 1911 following his election as the first president of China.

Some buildings have similar purposes but have changed form. For example, the Hongkong & Shanghai Bank Building (1923) is now the Shanghai Pudong Development Bank. The Custom House (1927) now houses a collection of Shanghai government agencies.

Custom House(1927)

The Custom House is one of the most important buildings on the Bund. It once had the largest clock face in Asia, modeled after London’s Big Ben.

And yet other buildings maintain similar purposes. For example, the Peace Hotel (1929), originally the Cathay Hotel, remains one of Shanghai’s most distinctive hotels.

Fairmount Peace Hotel (1929)

The buildings boast a mixture of architectural styles, such as art deco, neoclassical, Greek revival, and Chinese traditional. It’s a diversity of cultural styles within a unified unit.

Each of these buildings forms a part of the Bund’s history. Likewise, we have many varied pieces of history in our past, some of which we can “upgrade” by learning from them and making the best of them. Others we can retain. For example, did you have a difficult experience that you can learn from and avoid? Did you have a positive experience that you can repeat?

If you did something foolish that you regret, you can say, “That’s like the former Chartered Bank building. How can I replace that experience with something new?” Or, if you achieved a personal goal, like doing well on an exam or losing weight, you can say, “Like the Peace Hotel, it’s a beautiful achievement. How can I do this again?”

Dikembe Mutombo

At the Shanghai NBA pre-game reception, I spoke with retired player Dikembe Mutombo, whose best season as a pro was on the Philadelphia 76ers in 2001. He said it is important to meditate on your life experiences, to learn from bad events, and seek how to improve the good. He said this awareness was crucial to his success as a basketball player.

02

Your past and your future exist side by side

As the Huangpu River follows a north-south trajectory in this part of Shanghai, the historic buildings lie to the west and the Pudong new district to the east. The river, constantly flowing, represents your current life. Your past is to one side, and your future to the other. If you look one way, you can see your past, and the other, your future. They are not in conflict.

Russo-Chinese Bank Building(1902)

The question becomes how can you use your past to build your future? It’s too late to recreate the old “Bund” in your life, but it’s still possible to create your own personal “Pudong.” If you only look toward the Bund, you can become mired in the past and miss the future Pudong. If you only look at Pudong, you miss the past that gave rise to Shanghai’s new financial center.

The secret, then, is to look at both and create your own equally dazzling future. Your past is always with you, and it has given you a foundation to build a future. Rather than forget the past, work with it to move forward.

Dikembe Mutombo

Dikembe Mutombo is from Congo, whose citizens are among the poorest people in the world. I asked him how his background helped him professionally, and he said, “Hardship.” He said the memories of walking to a distant school and growing up in extreme poverty are still with him today, giving him the strength and stamina that put him over the top.

03

Your future is there, but you can’t necessarily see it

On one of my walks on a rainy day, the top of the Shanghai Center disappeared into the clouds. I knew it was there, but I just couldn’t see it. As the clouds moved, I could glimpse bits and pieces of it, but I couldn’t form a full picture of it. But, that doesn’t mean the top of the building wasn’t there. It was disguised, masked for the moment.

And so is our future. Even though we can’t see it, we know it’s there. If your own future seems cloudy right now, take heart. You can see bits and pieces of it as the clouds move, but in the end, the greatest influence is how you prepare and work toward it.

North China Daily News Building (1924)

One goal can build on the next, growing “higher” each time. For example, the North China Daily News Building (1924) and the Bank of China Building (1942) were once among the tallest buildings in Shanghai. One century later, they face the 632 m/2,073 ft Shanghai Center, now the second tallest building in the world.

Shanghai Bund

One of my friends who graduated from Temple, Dr. Colin Huang, is a distinguished radiation oncologist. About 10 years ago, he gave me the new Shanghai Bund television series starring Huang Xiaoming. Each day I would watch the next episode. Little did I know that I would still be using much of that vocabulary today!

Pudong Morning

My friend, a walk down the Shanghai Bund can serve as a great inspiration for your own life. The past is to one side, the future to the other. Even though you can’t see your future, your past provides some clues, and your present goals and efforts shape your future. How can you follow Shanghai’s path to create an exciting future of your own?
