Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne is a beloved and treasured adventure novel. In the story, Phileas Fogg, a rigid London gentleman, accepts a £20,000 bet that he can circumnavigate the globe in 80 days. His friends chided him, saying he couldn’t do it, but Fogg was determined and willing to bet money that he could.
This may not seem impressive today, but the novel was published in 1873. The Suez Canal in Egypt and a new railway section in India, both British colonies at the time, had just been opened, making this 80-day trip possible. Moreover, t he £20,000 wager is worth over $2 million (around 15 million yuan) today. Quite a lot was at stake.
The book takes us from London through the Suez Canal by boat, across India by train and elephant, through Hong Kong, Yokohama, and San Francisco by steamer, across the United States by train, and then back to London by boat. He reunites with his friends just before the end of the 80 days, winning the bet.
He travels with his French valet, Passepartout. They encounter many interesting characters and travel companions along the way, including a British detective who suspects Fogg of theft, an Indian princess who is about to be sacrificed, and cowboys and Indians in the American West.

Around The World in 80 Days has been adapted into many movies. In the 1956 epic film, an all-star cast reenacted the journey, adding in a balloon ride in France, a bullfight in Spain, and a boat ride past the Grand Palace of Bangkok. In the 2004 film, Jackie Chan and Arnold Schwarzenegger starred, with Jackie Chan playing the role of Passepartout, Fogg’s valet.

Here are 8 quotes from the novel that I found particularly inspiring:
1. The unforeseen does not exist.
Fogg lived in the present. When his friends told him there were too many difficulties that could cause unforeseen delay, Fogg was not swayed. He had studied the route and believed the journey could actually be completed in fewer than 80 days, but he included some extra days as a cushion. He dismissed his friends’ snub, saying, “The unforeseen does not exist.”
His preparedness paid off. For example, a typhoon hit as they were traveling by boat from Hong Kong to Shanghai. Fogg wasn’t concerned by the dangers or possible delays, as “it seemed just as if the typhoon were a part of his program.” Fogg’s planning allowed him to maintain his composure and see threats with a sense of humor.
2. A minimum well employed suffices for everything.
Fogg’s friends did not doubt he could travel around the world; they simply goaded him that 80 days was not enough time. Fogg responded, tartly, that “a minimum well employed suffices for everything.” In Fogg’s mind, although it’s important to allow for some wiggle room in your plans, it is no substitute for precision in executing plans.
3. Anything one man can imagine, other men can make real.
Although most of Fogg’s friends said he could not achieve his goal, an old paralytic Lord Albemarle believed in Fogg. At this time, the British empire was reaching its height, so many British believed they could do anything. Albemarle said, “If the thing is feasible, the first to do it ought to be an Englishman.”
Over time, though, this quote has been broadened in popular culture. In the 1955 version of the movie, Fogg says, “Anything one man can imagine, other men can make real.” So true.
4. Fortune favors the brave.
As they traveled through the Indian jungles, they came across a funeral ceremony for an old rajah. According to the local custom, his young wife had to be sacrificed and buried along with him. We learn that the wife, Mrs. Aouda, had been married to the rajah against her will. Fogg, then traveling by elephant, decided to stop and save Aouda, despite the loss of time.
His bravery paid off. Aouda accompanied him for the rest of the journey, and they ultimately married back in London. Indeed, this act of bravery spurred the transformation of the stoic and stiff Fogg into a family man.

Later on, in the American West, railway signalers stopped the transcontinental train before a rickety bridge. As American settlers are known for their courage in battling a myriad of forces, the novel tells us that, “with the careless habits of the Americans, we may say that when they are prudent, we would be very foolish not to be so.”
Fogg is aware of the American inclination to take risks, so he took the signalers’ warning very seriously. But in the end, other Americans on the train encouraged the conductor to drive the train as fast as he could to cross the bridge before it collapsed. And indeed, just after crossing, the bridge collapsed into the river below.
5. The chance which escapes us now may return at the last moment.
Fogg was determined to save Aouda from the involuntary sacrifice, and he carefully observed the funeral procession for an opportunity to capture her. When his companions told him that it looked impossible, Fogg replied, “The chance which escapes us now may return at the last moment.”
In other words, Fogg was saying just because no solution appears evident at that moment, an opportunity may still arise. He left space for imagination and possibility. Fortunately, Fogg’s positive mindset inspired his companions, and they found a way to rescue the woman.
6. Why, you are a man of heart!
In deciding to delay the trip and save Aouda, Fogg was told, “Why, you are a man of heart!” He responded by saying, “Sometimes, when I have the time.” This quote suggests that Fogg would not have decided to save Aouda if he didn't have time to spare.
However, he at least had some heart, which later caused him to undergo an emotional transformation. When they get married at the end of the novel, he realizes that Aouda is the greatest thing he gained from this trip. He demonstrates that logic and reason need not be in conflict with emotions and matters of the heart.
7. I see that it is not useless to travel, if we wish to see anything new.
After passing through the Suez Canal, the steamer stopped in Aden to restock on coal. Fogg did not get off the steamer, staying on board and focusing solely on his plan for the rest of the journey. Passepartout, though, got off the steamer and walked around, this being his first time in a distinctly foreign land.
As he observed the different architecture and customs, as well as the blending of people from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, he remarked, "I see that it is not useless to travel, if we wish to see anything new."

This reminded me of the Chinese proverb, “traveling thousands of miles is better than reading thousands of books.” Indeed, you can learn more about traveling to places as opposed to reading about them. We learn from experience. If you’re not sure if you are able to do something, actually trying it will be more instructive than reading about it.
8. He was a man of the least possible haste, but he always arrived on time.
Fogg arranged his affairs so that he would always be on time and never have to rush.
Punctuality is an important leadership skill. President Barack Obama once said that his greatest strength is, “Probably that I am always early. Whether I’m headed to a meeting or about to give a big speech, I like to know I’m running early.” He continued, “When you’re early, there’s no limit to what you can accomplish.”
