Teamwork is not

just for sports

Teamwork skills

Teamwork helps with your studies and skill development

Teamwork can help you achieve a personal goal

Teamwork is strength

Teamwork: work with others to exceed your limits

 Hello, my friend!

I'm John Smagula. 」

I just attended the 40th Anniversary celebration of the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) law school. I was honored to be a keynote speaker and to congratulate this remarkable institution on its success.

 UIBE Anniversary

There were over 400 dignitaries, university officials, law school deans, faculty, and other participants at the full-day event. Many logistic issues had to be managed, and the conference would not have been executed smoothly without the many student volunteers who helped with the set-up, registration, hospitality, and clean-up.

These students worked in teams, and each team had a duty. Many were directing guests to the various event locations. Others were facilitating the tea breaks. Some were welcoming visitors and coordinating the opening ceremony. Yet all the students, undergraduate and graduate alike, were professional and courteous—and worked with a smile.

Teamwork is an important job skill. If you are now interviewing for an internship or jobs, know that many employers will assess whether you can work well on a team.

Teamwork is not just

for sports

We often think of teamwork in sports. For example, I recently attended the NBA China Games in Shanghai and Shenzhen, watching the 76ers square off against the Mavericks. The crowd cheered wildly for each player who scored a basket. That basket, however, was made possible by the team’s planning, coordination, and cooperation to set up the perfect play.

NBA Shenzhen 2018

“Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.” --Michael Jordan, former American basketball player

Like basketball, teamwork is an essential part of school and workplace success. Each team member has a specific role to play in accomplishing tasks on the job. A team player understands that not every player on the team will be the one who gets the ball. When everyone works together to accomplish goals, everyone achieves more.

“It is amazing what can be accomplished when nobody cares about who gets the credit.” --Robert Yates (1738-1801), American politician and judge

Teamwork skills

Back in 2016, I was in a Beijing taxi, and the driver was bemoaning the performance of the Chinese men’s basketball team in the Summer Olympics in Rio. He said, “Chinese do well in individual sports, but we just can’t play team sports.”

When I reminded him that the Chinese women’s soccer team made the quarter-finals that year, and that many Chinese teams have excelled in ping pong, badminton, volleyball, and tennis, this disgruntled taxi driver just dismissed my remark.

There are many factors that influence a team’s success. National culture may be one thing, but there are certain characteristics of team culture that are universal:

Working cooperativelyContributing ideas, suggestions, and effortCommunicating with others, by listening as well as speakingHaving a sense of responsibility (being accountable) for one’s own work as well as that of the teamParticipating in and guiding group decision makingShowing respect for different opinions, customs, and individual preferences

As team members, we have to do some things we like, and some things we don’t. We have to communicate, but also accept instructions. We have to advance a common goal, while being tolerant of the quirks of each team member. And when one person’s strengths can supplement another’s weaknesses, everyone can learn from each other. It’s a healthy environment.

Teamwork helps with your studies and skill development

Study groups really helped me survive law school. Each week, I got together with three classmates to review the cases we had studied that week, clarify the main ideas, and debate the interesting points. As we approached exams, Jim, Karen, Laura, and I would quiz each other, going over possible exam questions and talking through the answers.

Our study group was a team. Even though we didn’t wear uniforms or have a name, we had a responsibility to each other. We had to be current on our homework to participate in the discussions. Each classmate would rely on the others to be prepared.

In other words, we had to be accountable to each other. Accountability is an important element of success. When you compete with yourself, it’s often easy to slack off. But when you work with others to accomplish a goal, this sense of responsibility will not only help you but also those on the team. Everyone benefits.

So if you are struggling in an area of study or skill, why not form a team? For example, if you are studying English, you can get together with some classmates to review your homework, discuss concepts you don’t understand, and practice your spoken English together. As your team comes together, you’ll support each other and be accountable by being prepared.

“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” --Henry Ford (1863-1947), founder of the Ford Motor Company

Teamwork can help you achieve a personal goal

If you are trying to achieve an individual goal but find that you are stuck, you may need the help of other people. If you are not doing well in your studies, a study group may help you. If you are trying to succeed in your job, you may need to reevaluate your relationship with your coworkers and see how you can come together as a team.

For example, many marathon runners are in running clubs. They support and encourage each other as they train for competitions. If you are trying to lose weight or quit smoking, joining forces with others for accountability, advice, and support has been shown to be very effective.

“There is no such thing as a self-made man. You will reach your goals only with the help of others.” --George Shinn, former owner of the NBA Charlotte Hornets

Teamwork is strength

It is often easier to face difficulties and threats as a team than as an individual. When you are part of a team, you have a support system that can help you withstand the storm.

 The Avengers (2012)

In The Avengers, Nick Fury, director of the spy agency S.H.I.E.L.D. recruits Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, Thor, and Black Widow to form a team that stops the evil Loki from subjugating Earth. They have their differences, but ultimately come together to battle the hostile forces and save the world. Their strength as a team is much stronger than the sum of its individual parts.

Team Spirit

“Where one alone may be overcome, two together can resist. A three-ply cord is not easily broken” --Ecclesiastes 4:12. It is easy to break a piece of string, but if you weave several pieces of string together into a rope, that rope is not easily severed.

The UIBE students' effective teamwork inspired me write today's article. They demonstrated how teamwork can help create something larger than themselves. Congratulations, once again.

●●●

Teamwork can also be for the common good. In his remarks at the UIBE conference, Peking University Law School Dean Pan Jianfeng said, “If something is good for everyone, then it is truly good.”

My friend, teamwork is a valuable skill that can help you in many areas of life. Even if you are not an athlete, you can still acquire teamwork skills to help you succeed at school and work. You’ll then see how teamwork can help with your work and studies, help you achieve personal goals, and give you strength to overcome and succeed.
