Charlie Brown

Sally Brown

Snoopy

Woodstock

Lucy Van Pelt

Linus Van Pelt

Franklin

Peppermint Patty

Marcie

Take part in this 25-minute

American Thanksgiving tradition!

 Hello, my friend!

I'm John Smagula. 」

Today is Thanksgiving Day, a day when Americans reunite with their families, enjoy a turkey dinner, and take time to appreciate what they have in life.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles is a classic Thanksgiving comedy film, which features the hilarious journey of two unwitting friends as they try to get home during the Thanksgiving travel rush full of unexpected delays. Last Thanksgiving I shared this movie with you, along with its main idea: have an attitude of gratitude.

There are many Thanksgiving traditions. Most Americans travel to be with family and enjoy a turkey feast. They often attend Thanksgiving Day parades or watch Thanksgiving Day football games. Some people volunteer in homeless shelters, serving meals to the less fortunate. Many families have their own customs that have been passed down for generations.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

One of most beloved traditions is to watch A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, the 1973 cartoon that is broadcast every year the night before Thanksgiving. This 25-minute short film captures the essence of the holiday. Many adults watch this movie with a sense of nostalgia, yearning for past Thanksgiving memories. Children enjoy the entertainment, becoming part of the tradition.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

I was unable to find a version with Chinese subtitles, but the story is easy to follow, and the characters speak slowly. Perhaps you can make this your “Thanksgiving Challenge,” to watch the film and try to understand the English! There may be some slang terms and expressions you don’t understand, but focus on the main idea. To help you along, here’s my guide to the movie:

Background

Pilgrim Costumes

Charlie Brown is a member of the Peanuts gang, a comic strip that ran from 1950-2000, and continued with reruns afterward. Peanuts is among the most popular and influential in the history of comic strips. The main characters, led by Charlie Brown and Snoopy, found many fun and amusing situations in daily life.

The series then grew to include movies (The Peanuts Movie was released in 2015), theatrical productions, video games, and holiday-themed television specials, so Peanuts is a very familiar part of American culture.

Cast of Characters

In A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, we meet the following characters:

Charlie Brown

(also known as Chuck)

an upright boy who rises out of every downfall and tries to get along with everyone.

Sally Brown

Charlie’s younger sister, who complains and overreacts to situations.

Snoopy

Charlie Brown’s intelligent pet dog, a beagle prone to fantasies.

Woodstock

A tiny yellow bird, and Snoopy’s not-too-bright best friend.

Lucy Van Pelt

a bossy girl who makes a fuss about everything.

Linus Van Pelt

Lucy’s philosophical brother and Charlie Brown’s best friend.

Franklin

the African-American child, a great conversationalist often bemused by events in the neighborhood.

Peppermint Patty

a pushy tomboy with a romantic interest in Charlie Brown.

Marcie

a mild-mannered, bespectacled bookworm.

The Story

On Thanksgiving Day, Charlie Brown and Sally are at home, planning to go to dinner at their grandmother’s house. Peppermint Patty calls Charlie Brown and invites herself over to his house with Marcie and Franklin. Charlie Brown is in a quandary, as he didn’t think he could invite them to his grandmother’s, but he also didn’t want to reject his friends on this special day.

Linus shows up and suggests Charlie Brown cook dinner for his friends, and then later go to his grandmother’s as planned. But Charlie Brown doesn’t know how to cook, and they recruit Snoopy and Woodstock to come up with something. They also convert a ping-pong table into a dinner table and set it up in the back yard.

Snoopy makes toast

As the guests arrive and sit down, Linus tells the story of how the Pilgrims and Indians celebrated the First Thanksgiving in 1621. The Pilgrims on the Mayflower had landed near present-day Boston in November 1620 and survived a harsh winter. Together with the Indians, they enjoyed the bounty of their first harvest the following year.

Linus then leads the group in grace, based on the original prayer, “We thank God for our homes and our food and our safety in a new land. We thank God for the opportunity to create a new world for freedom and justice.”

Snoopy then serves a non-traditional dinner: buttered toast, pretzel sticks, popcorn, jelly beans, and ice cream sundaes. Peppermint Patty becomes outraged, demanding turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. She berates Charlie Brown for preparing such an unconventional dinner.

Peppermint Patty complains

Charlie Brown feels bad, thinking he ruined everyone’s Thanksgiving—even though he did his best and never invited these friends over to begin with.

 Wishbone

Marcie then helps Peppermint Patty see the wrongness of her ways, and Peppermint Patty apologizes and reconciles with Charlie Brown. In the end, Charlie Brown’s grandmother invites all the children to her home, and they shout with delight. Snoopy and Woodstock stay behind, enjoying their own Thanksgiving feast.

Some Thanksgiving Lessons

01

Friends are more important than food

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, New York

As he detailed the history of the holiday, Linus implied that Thanksgiving is more than eating. Marcie reminds Charlie Brown about this, telling him that the Pilgrims were thankful for what had happened to them, that we should also be grateful, and that we should just be thankful for being together—regardless of the circumstances.

I have been to many dinners with friends over the years, and in some way or another, we have sometimes been disappointed with the food. This could influence the mood of the whole gathering. In the end, being in the company of friends is more important than the quality of the food, and in fact, a bad meal could be a reminder of the more valuable gift of friendship.

Several friends recently gathered together to throw me a birthday party in Beijing. I was very touched that they took time out of their busy schedules to celebrate with me. Some people we invited couldn’t attend, as they were traveling or had family commitments, but I knew they’d be there if they could—and I was grateful they were there in spirit.

02

Two is company

After Charlie Brown and his friends leave for his grandmother’s house, Snoopy and Woodstock stay behind to enjoy their own feast. They found happiness in being together, as opposed to being part of a large crowd.

I have been hosted for many dinners in China, and often, many people are invited. For some dinners, though, some of the invitees cancel for some reason or another, generally for understandable reasons. The host then feels awkward. I always assure the host, though, that I am grateful for the effort and am happy to enjoy the time with those who actually came.

03

Make a wish

As Snoopy and Woodstock enjoy their dinner, they break the turkey’s wishbone. This is a common part of the holiday celebration. After the meat has been removed and the wishbone becomes dry and brittle, two people each take one end of the bone, make a wish, and pull. Whoever ends up with the larger part of the bone gets their wish!

Although I don’t believe in good luck charms, I do believe that gratitude is the foundation of success. To a make a wish is to have hope. When you are grateful for what you have, you grow in confidence with yourself and your life, and this confidence gives you proper perspective and enables you to make plans and do great things, turning your hopes into reality.

My friend, I hope you enjoyed sharing in this traditional Thanksgiving event with me. I am grateful for your support of my blog, and I will continue to be with you as you go through the ups and downs of life. Even though we don’t officially celebrate Thanksgiving in China, we don’t need a holiday to be grateful. And I am grateful for you. Happy Thanksgiving!
