Both refer to poeisis, the making of things or the construction of works. It is an interesting question for the history of technology and art how the art and craft of making things was divided into the “fine arts” on the one hand, the “mechanical arts” on the other hand. The thematic focus of the Yearbook does not dwell on this historical point. In contrast, it is concerned with the various relations of “art” and “technology”, that is, it seeks to interrogate and reflect (1) their conceptual filiations, (2) their complementarities and mutual stimulations, and (3) contrasts and tensions. The very notion of the “work” challenges us to explode or triangulate the dichotomy of art and technology.
Under the heading “Art and Work” we seek to question and subvert the various attempts by the humanities to differentiate the spheres of art and technology. This includes fresh perspectives on the relation of art as a process to the product of this process in its technological context – which might be represented by the “work”. This connects to further problems in and for the philosophy of technology, such as the relation of arts and crafts (e.g., Sennett), the question of Kitsch or camp in art and technology, or the role of play as a basic modality of artful technical production. Finally, of course, comes design, packaging, marketing and the aesthetic effects of works.
This thematic focus is shared between the Yearbook for the Philosophy of Technology with the journal for the History of Technology (Zeitschrift für Technikgeschichte) which will issue a corresponding call for papers. Beyond the thematic focus, the Yearbook publishes contributions, book reviews, discussions on any topic in the philosophy of technology.
