Effect Space Solutions wins $100m contract for space drones
【180117 TheMarker】Effective Space Solutions whose space drones are used to service satellites, said on Wednesday it had signed a multi-year contract worth more than $100 million with what is said to be a major regional satellite operator. The agreement calls for two of the company’s Space Drone spacecraft launched in 2020 to provide station-keeping and attitude-control capabilities that extend the lifespan of two communication satellites. “We are seeing steady growth in the number of satellite launches per year, but little progress has been made in increasing the life span of this space hardware,” said CEO and founder Arie Halsband.” Effective Space’s drones weigh less than 400 kilograms and are designed for docking with nearly all the approximately 400 communications satellites orbiting the earth. The drones are now being used for functions such as relocation and station-keeping, but the company said they could eventually be utilized for removing space debris.
New publicly traded VC funds having trouble raising money from institutions
Five newly formed venture capital funds to be traded on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange are encountering little enthusiasm from institutional investors and having trouble raising capital, TheMarker has learned. As of Wednesday, the five funds have raised a combined 300 million shekels ($87.2 million), far short of the 400-million-shekel minimum they need to raise to qualify for Finance Ministry benefits, such as a safety net against losses of more than 50 million shekels. The government authorized up to four such funds in the hopes of giving small investors a way to put money into Israel’s high-tech sector. Although there is considerable time before the government’s fundraising deadline, so far the only institutions to put money into the funds are the smaller investment houses, sources said. “They really wanted us to be involved, but I refused because I didn’t think it would benefit our clients,” said one investment manager who declined to be named.
VDOO raises $13 million for internet-of-things security
VDOO, an Israeli startup developing cybersecurity for the internet of things, said on Wednesday it has raised $13 million from investors led by 83North. Its first-ever fundraising round also included backing from Dell Technology Capital and individual investors, including Greylock partner David Strohm; former EMC CEO Joe Tucci; and Victor Tsao, the founder of Linksys. The funding will be used to develop and commercialize VDOO’s IoT security platform. “The problem is that there are no actionable processes or standards to guide IoT makers in the implementation of the proper security for each specific device,” said VDOO co-founder and co-CEO Netanel Davidi. “VDOO helps IoT makers protect their customers, by enabling them to set and implement the right security for each of their devices.” VDOO was formed by Davidi, Uri Alter, and Asaf Karas — after selling their previous startup, Cyvera, to Palo Alto Networks in 2014.
