清朝德龄公主，少年时在日本和法国生活了六年，17岁时随父回京，因通晓外文和西方礼仪，和妹妹裕容龄一同被慈禧招入宫中担任翻译，也成为紫禁城八女官之一。日前网上德龄公主的英文演讲视频，惊艳了无数网友。

该视频拍摄于1930年，当时德龄公主44岁。
在演讲中她表示，当今社会正经历着前所未有的变革。她希望国家与国家之间相互理解，相互尊重，只有这样，才能实现全世界的和平。
通过写作和讲课的方式，她向美国人民展示了中华民族灿烂的文化，促进两国人民之间的相互了解。
她也认识到，中国与美国之间还存在着很大的差距，中国人民愿意敞开怀抱，虚心学习。
The world today is passing through the most tremendous periods of real adjustment as mankind has seen. And the real desire to do away with the war is being manifested. Peace on earth and good will towards man can only be accomplished by the mutual respect and understanding from one nation towards another.
Since I have been in this country first time through my writing and lecturing, I have endeavered to create a better understanding between China and the United States by presenting their beautiful artistic and cutural side of Chinese life. I am grieved that this side of Chinese life is very little known here. Although China is a very old country, she is a young republic. She is striving, muffling to develop and become up to date.
This will take time, but in Chinese' heart, it is not far behind her American sisters in her desire to become emancipated. Rapid trasportation has brought China and the United States to each other's doorway. And the greatest strength of all has been the movies,too, to address millions of people who listen from movies to news. I feel especially privileged and grateful.

Princess Der Ling's father, Yu Geng, was a member of the Hanjun Plain White Banner Corps.
德龄公主的父亲裕庚本为汉人，后入满族汉军正白旗。
After serving as Chinese minister to Japan, he was appointed minister to the French Third Republic for four years in 1899.
裕庚任出使日本特命全权大臣三年后，又担任大清驻法兰西第三共和国公使四年。
He was known for his progressive, reformist views; for his determination to educate his children, including the girls, in western schools, which was highly unusual in their generation.
他思想先进，推崇改革，主张自己的孩子接受西方教育，包括女孩。这在那个年代十分难得。
Yü Keng's daughters, Der Ling and Rong Ling (1882–1973, the future Madame Dan Paochao of Beijing) received a western education, learning French and English, and studying dance in Paris with Isadora Duncan.
裕庚的女儿，德龄和容龄，均接受了西方教育，学习法语和英语。在法国期间，师从现代舞蹈大师伊莎多拉·邓肯，学习舞蹈。

Upon their return to China, Der Ling became the First lady-in-waiting to the Empress Dowager Cixi, as well as interpreting for her when she received foreign visitors.
1902年回到中国后，德龄成为了慈禧太后的女仕臣，并在慈禧太后接待外宾时担任翻译。

Der Ling stayed at court until March 1905. In 1907, Der Ling married Thaddeus C. White, an American.
1905年3月，德龄离开皇宫。1907年，德龄与美国驻沪领事馆副领事迪厄斯·怀特结婚。
Der Ling wrote of her experiences in court in her memoir Two Years in the Forbidden City, which was published in 1911.
德龄将自己的宫廷经历写成了回忆录《清宫二年记》（又名《我在慈禧身边的两年》），并在1911年出版。
After Cixi's death in 1908, Der Ling professed to be so angered by what she saw as false portraits of Cixi appearing in books and periodicals that she wrote her own account of serving "Old Buddha".
1908年，慈禧去世后，各种书籍和学术期刊都抹黑慈禧，对她进行了错误的报道，这让德龄十分懊恼。于是她写下了自己侍奉“老佛爷”慈禧的经历。
In this book, Cixi is not the monster of depravity depicted in the popular press, but an aging woman who loved beautiful things, had many regrets about the past and the way she had dealt with the many crises of her long reign, and apparently trusted Der Ling enough to share many memories and opinions with her.
书中，慈禧并不是像大众媒体报道的那样，是一个腐坏堕落的恶魔，而是一个上了年纪的老太太，也会喜欢漂亮的事物，对往事，对自己经历过的那些国之大难抱有遗憾。很显然，慈禧非常信任德龄，跟她分享了很多自己的回忆和感想。
Two Years provides unique insights into life at the Manchu court and the character of the Empress Dowager Empress. Der Ling continued to write and published seven more books.
这本书为后人研究满族宫廷和慈禧太后提供了珍贵的材料。随后，她又先后出版了7本著作。
Princess Der Ling died in Berkeley, California, as a result of being struck by a car while crossing an intersection. She had recently taught Chinese at University of California, Berkeley.
1944年，德龄公主因一场交通意外，不幸逝世于美国加州伯克利。逝世前，她任教于美国加州大学伯克利分校，教授中文。
说到晚晴，我们常常认为那是一个愚昧、闭塞、麻木的年代。其实那个年代的中国，同样有一帮有识之士。他们愿意去尝试新鲜事物，融入世界，了解异国文化。
