Chen Hongyu is an indie musician born in Ergun, Inner Mongolia in 1989. He founded the music label, Enjoy Music Together, in 2015, and his newly-released live single, Youth Soon To Expire, started a nationwide craze for the folk song in the same year. In 2017, he was awarded the Best New Artist and the Best Folk Album at the first CMIC Music Awards and also nominated as Best Male New Artist of the Year at the Chinese Music Awards; in 2018, Mr. Chen was enlisted in 30 Under 30 China by Forbes. As the managing director of music records, he works with Enjoy Music Together to release a music collection every year and engage in cross-boundary artistic cooperation and performance with a commitment that music can connect all things. Meanwhile, he set up another artistic architecture project, The Black Ark. By erecting a building on the boundless grassland in his hometown, he seeks to discuss his relationship with people, things, and himself in solitude. In 2021, Chen Hongyu founded the new label MAD Records to start more exploration in musical style.

The indie musician Chen Hongyu comes from Ergun, a small border city in Inner Mongolia, and now lives in Beijing. The artist has been searching for deeper emotional connections with his hometown. From Regain Hometown to The Black Ark, he turns music into the link between the city and the hometown but also tantalizes it into a retreat for mind and soul on the grassland. He also expands his focus on more small cities, letting more people rediscover the sense of security from the solitude of their hometown.

他近期参与的部分展览包括 “From Luther to Twitter. Media and the Public Sphere”,

The artist Ge Yulu (b. 1990, Wuhan) graduated from the Media Art Department of the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts in 2013, and received an M.F.A. from the Experimental Art Department at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2018. He now lives and works on the outskirts of Beijing. Ge Yulu’s interests lie in the witty expressions in public urban spaces. Through his art, Ge Yulu strives to mock up the hidden paradox in life. By intervening and negotiating with the public space using his body, Ge Yulu aims to create new dynamic relationships. He held solo exhibitions at Beijing Commune, Beijing, and Fei Art Museum, Guangzhou. His recent group exhibitions include From Luther to Twitter. Media and the Public Sphere at Deutsches Historisches Museum, Berlin, Germany in 2020; Aichi Triennale 2019 -- Taming Y/Our Passion at Nagoya, Japan in 2019; the 1st Borderless Art Season in 2018 at Fei Art Museum, Guangzhou, China; Altering Home at 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art at Kanazawa, Japan in 2018; the Exhibition of Annual of Contemporary Art of China at Beijing Minsheng Art Museum, Beijing, China in 2018; Stress Field: the 4th Documentary Exhibition of Fine Arts at Hubei Art Museum, Wuhan, China in 2017; Antibody Fresh Vision 2017 at OCT Loft, Shenzhen, China in 2017; CAFAM Biennial: Negotiating Space at CAFA Museum, Beijing, China in 2016, etc.

Ge Yulu had to live in Yanjiao due to financial necessity when he first came to Beijing. It is on the outskirts of Beijing that he started his career. The wild and free boundary, the uncertain intercity life, and absurd pandemic practices enrich the natural ecosystem of this unique enclave. Yanjiao witnesses the time when Mr. Ge spends his first few years in Beijing, but also the collision and dialogue between the development of big cities and the future of small cities in this era.

As the founder and creative director of huangyangdesign, Huang Yang is also a member of an artistic group seeyoutomorrow. His works have been introduced in Contemporary Graphic Design published by Taschen; Huang served as a judge for 2013 Graphic Design in China and for 2018 Ban Xue Gang High-Tech Zone Urban Core Area Quality Improvement International Design Competition (Visual Identity), as well as a joint curator of the image unit in The 2015 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture.

Huang Yang designs eight posters to express his emotions and memories of his hometown - Gulin County and Neijiang, both in Sichuan. His simplest graphic language highlights a few significant moments, locations, people, and objects in the memory of his hometown. Huang Yang has long lived and worked in Shenzhen, and is physically and spiritually separated from his hometown. It is the reality and dilemma that inspires the artist to convey the theme of hometown with the most emotion and relevance in the abstract graphic designs.

Liang Chen, an architect and artist. Born in Dandong, Liaoning, China, in 1987. He graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Architecture from Jilin Jianzhu University. From 2011 to 2015, as former associate and senior project architect at Vector Architects, Liang completed projects including Aranya Seashore Library (also known as "Lonely Library"). Over the years, Liang Chen has conducted long and multi-temporal observations and research on his hometown Dandong. He connects the urban changes in Northeast China, the spatial history of Dandong, and the spatial changes of his family home, advancing in layers of hometown research and self-analysis, awakening the material and spatial memories of his childhood, and building up the starting point and source of his creation. At the same time, based on the rich local cultural research and practice in Dandong, Erguna, and Xinjiang in recent years, Liang Chen initiated the "Border Project" based on interdisciplinary research in art, architecture, and anthropology. Focusing on the exchange of knowledge production at the border, he tries to reevaluate or decode the spatial and cultural borders we take for granted.

Li Han is the Founding Partner of Drawing Architecture Studio and the Class 1 Registered Architect (P.R.C.). After graduatingd from the Central Academy of Fine Arts and RMIT University, he has accumulated massive practices in the architectural drawings, urban studies and architecture design. He is the author of A Little Bit of Beijing, A Little Bit of Beijing · Dashilar, and Hutong Mushroom. His works have been exhibited widely, including the Chinese Pavilion and Japan Pavilion of the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale, the 7th Shenzhen / Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism / Architecture, and Architecture in Comic-Strip Form in Oslo. He was the Overall and Digital Category winners of 2018 WAF Architecture Drawing Prize and won Second Place at 2016 RIBA Journal Eye Line Drawing Competition. His works are among the permanent collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Shenzhen Pingshan Art Museum.

Being a Beijinger, Li Han has never lived in a small town, but he wants to experience a small city as a visitor. He randomly chooses Pinggu Village around Beijing, not because of how special it is, but because it is extremely ordinary. He prefers to view the ordinary things and corners of daily lives with the fresh probing eyes as outsiders. The artist records the salient points of daily routines he experienced and discovered with the model as a architect does. In his conclusion, unexceptional sights and the everyday situation touch people more and last longer and people are thus encouraged to slowly and firmly appreciate everything in life.

Li Qing was born in Huzhou, Zhejiang in 1981. He lives and works in Hangzhou and Shanghai. He has had solo shows at Fondazione Prada’s Rongzhai, Shanghai; Tomás y Valiente Art Centre, Madrid; Arario Museum, Seoul; The Orient Foundation, Macao; Zhejiang Art Museum; Goethe Institute, Shanghai; among others. Li is shortlisted for the Jean-François Prat Prize in 2017. His works seek rational rifts in similarity and contradiction, acting on the perception and acknowledgment of a viewer through circuitous and overlapped structures. In recent years, his works are testing the tension and contradiction between image, language, symbol and social space, connecting the multi-level elements of experience in series to construct a conflict structure.

In the 21st century, farmers who live around the suburb of Huzhou, Zhejiang - where Li Qing comes - began to build detached houses as they understand modern architecture, and freely took design inspirations from traditional and international architecture. These bizarre houses reflect the aesthetic judgment of Chinese people on the imaginary prosperity at the period of economic development and consumerism, while the knock-off hybrid manifests how the knowledge and information brought by globalization are locally spread and shared in China. Now, the former suburban villages have been split into pieces, and these housing compounds grow scarcer. Li Qing seeks to re-examine the value of this raw modern architectural practice and the aesthetics of common people through his creation.

In small cities, the fonts on city signboards can always bring unexpected surprises. Through seemingly random combinations, the texts project local culture, life, and language into the city image. I deliberately disassembled the characters and replaced components with normal text to reinvigorate the urban landscape.

Lu Qingyi was born in Mawei Town, Dushan County, Guizhou in 1973 but he left his hometown and lived in Beijing at the age of 15. As a migrant in Beijing, he used to a football player, a pub singer, a editor in publishing house, a miner and a photographer. He is now a documentary filmmaker dedicated to photography and film creation. The documentary feature Four Springs he completed alone in 2018 was awarded the Best Documentary Feature of the FIRST International Film Festival, and was shortlisted for the Best Documentary Feature and Best Film Editing of the Golden Horse Award.

After 33 years in Beijing, Lu Qingyi still feels rootless. Hometown has been the focus whether in the people and things he interested, or the lives he fancies. In particular, the Luodian County in Guizhou where his grandparents settled becomes his spiritual home. In the documentary feature Four Springs, the daily family experiences and the local people and scenery in South Guizhou impressed many viewers. Now, he turns the camera footage from Dushan County to Luodian County and also from a smaller family to a larger clan. By recording natural environment, ethnic culture, family life and other details, he takes us on the desirable picture of living in a small city. Unfolding the stories of local areas in stories about local people, Lu Qingyi tries to discover the aesthetic and value in the quiet life at the town.

Xiao He always describes himself as the third son of He Pingsuo and Tian Qiaoyun. He is actually the lead vocalist of Glamorous Pharmacy Band, and the founder of the Music Portrait Program, Echo Action, and Nursery Rhyme Program.

/Xiaohe was born and raised in Handan. In 2021, he and his team started in Handan, crossed Jincheng, Luoyang, Sanmenxia, Xi'an, and Yan'an, and landed up in Yinchuan, completing the tour of nursery rhyme hunting in over one month. In different geographical locations, many old-timers sang nursery rhymes lying deep in their memories, which implied the raw essence, community life, and human ethos behind those cities. Xiao He compares music to a passage where you can see the neglected corners, feel the faint remembrance, and most importantly, meet old friends and make new ones.

Wu Linshou, Founding Principal of WAU Design, won the Young Architect Award from China Construction Industry Association in 2018 after graduating from the South China University of Technology with a bachelor's degree and receiving his master's degree from Ecole d'Architecture de Paris-la-Villette and Institut d'Urbanisme de Grenoble. His works have won multiple awards including the Chicago Athenaeum “International Architecture Award” and the WAACA, and have been collected by the Guan Shanyue Art Museum.

House is a vital emblem of home, particularly in China’s small towns, which are built under the dominance of Feng Shui and custom. Wu Linshou designs a house for his parents in Zhanjiang where his hometown is located. In this process, he keeps delving into how norms for house building form and change in Zhanjiang and tries to figure out the modernity of this building type.

Wen Na, a Beijing-born artist, earned her undergraduate degree in print from the Printmaking Department of the Academy of Arts & Design at Tsinghua University. She worked as an illustrator and editor for Beijing Youth Daily and created a large number of illustrations for novels and fairy tales as well as stage show posters. Her creation is dominated by mural paintings, and she imagines various new deities by borrowing ideas from the figures of Gods in Chinese paintings. She never copies the existing traditional symbols to create images in her works; instead, she mixes the function, history, and space of the place where the mural paintings are located with wild imaginations. Wen Na has been invited to produce works for cultural institutions across many countries, including the Musée d'art contemporain de Lyon in France in 2016, the UGC Ciné Cité in France in 2016, the Alassio Culture and Art Center in Italy 2011, and the Sanbao International Ceramics Art Village in Jingdezhen, China from 2010 to 2016.

Wen Na will complete Wen Na Art Space in Democuo in association with Wulin Traditional Village, Jinjiang, Quanzhou. As it takes her two years or longer to finish the work, she is closely bounded to the people, things, and objects here. This creation presents Quanzhou's time-honored history and urban texture, but also naturally breeds Wen Na Jing (Wen Na’s Painting Collection). With vigorous and wild atmosphere, the imaginative creation which naturally happens is a translation of history and future, space and time, dream and reality, and also another expression of local culture and life.

The New York Times,TLS等,并入选了爱尔兰国家图书奖短篇小说奖的长名单。

Yan Ge was born in Chengdu, Sichuan in 1984. As a novelist, she has authored novels The Chilli Bean Paste Clan and May Queen and published a collection of short stories called Sad Stories in Pingle Town. She was chosen as the Best New Writer by the prestigious Chinese Literature Media Prize and the Top Newcomer by the Mao Dun Literature Award, one of China's highest honorary events. Her works have been translated into English, French, German, and other eight languages. She was a two-time PEN Translates winner and was selected as the New York Times Notable Book of 2021. More than that, Yan Ge also writes in English with books published in The New York Times, and TLS and included in the winner list of Short Story of the Year - Irish Book Awards. Her first collection of short stories in English Elsewhere will come out in 2023 through Faber&Faber, UK, and Scribner Press, USA.

Yan Ge moved out of Pixian County and set up a home abroad seven years ago. As the home city of Chengdu was ballooning, she couldn’t tell how much this city would differ from the one she recalled. She set most stories in Yong'an City and Pingle Town, which are modeled on Chengdu City and Pixian County. When her hometown is increasingly out of reach, it is inevitably her only choice to simulate what the remote home will be in the world of fiction. The childhood town in different forms - whether the one unreal in the fiction or lingering in her memory, or the one to which she finds no return physically - overlaps and interweaves into a picture where lines fade away and colors stick out.

Zhang Xiao now lives in Chengdu. The artist used to work for Chongqing Morning News as a photojournalist before becoming a photographer in 2009. Zhang Xiao took a prize of Robert Gardner Fellowship in Photography at Harvard University In 2018. Coastline series won the Prix HSBC pour la Photographie in 2011, the Photographie.com in China in 2010, and the Houdenko Documentary Photography Award in 2009. Also, They series won the Three Shadows Photography Award in 2010. His previous exhibitions include The World in 2015 and Civilization: The Way We Live Now in UCCA, Beijing, Unfamiliar Families in Swiss Foundation of Photography, and Photoquai 2015 in Musée du Quai Branly, Paris. His works also were exhibited at Lianzhou FOTOin China, Shanghai Center of Photography, and other domestic and international exhibitions.

/After creating big-picture narratives such as They and Coastline, Zhang Xiao went back to his hometown in Taishang Village in Yantai, Shandong. At this vital juncture, he was geographically home and freed his mind. People and cities are changing due to the effects of economic development. The alienation is growing, and the lack of sense of belonging has become a  shared problem. The photographs Zhang shot during his return to his hometown concentrate and record more on what he felt. That also witnesses the process of the inner self looking out in a way he sees the reality more authentically and genuinely.

Foreword

Hometown Spring is the city project launched by City For Humanity, an independent brand under Life Week, in association with the curator Cui Cancan. The picture where spring drowns the cities in wild grass and trees and those moving emotional stories in small towns generate more imagination and hope in a similar way as the title and emotion of the film Spring in a Small Town indicate.

Large cities have dominated the urban narrative of urbanization where the population rapidly shifts over the past several decades. When big cities open themselves to the world, align themselves with globalization, and completely immerse themselves in the modern trends of industrialization and capitalization of capitalism, they are either motivated or forced to move away from localization and uniqueness and even every city dweller becomes an island, entire of itself. In the meantime, natural connections between cities and home villages are cut off. Traditional community integrating cities and home villages turns out to be a cultural nostalgia since it’s hard for the migrants to return. That is nothing short of the paradise lost.

In the middle of the super large-sized cities and very large-sized cities at the top of China’s city pyramid and the villages at the bottom are layers of satellite cities, third and fourth-tier cities and counties which are underplayed actively or passively. In assorted forms, small and medium-sized cities witness broader changes of times in China, so can they become the bond to rebuild the urban-rural continuum?

Hometown Spring focuses on the changes in many small cities and towns in China.  This exhibition is joined by 14 extraordinary creators, including Chen Hongyu (musician), Ge Yulu (artist), Huang Yang (designer), Li Han (architect), Li Qing(artist), Li Bingyuan (artist), Liang Chen (architect&artist), Liu Zhao (designer), Lu Qingyi (director), Wen Na (artist), Wu Linshou (architect), Xiao He (musician), Yan Ge (writer), and Zhang Xiao (artist). They’re inspired to adventure into their own hometowns, or small cities where others have lived to see landmarks inside the city, billboard changes on the street, and parks on the corner. With all eyes on every detail, they intend to present a new insight and narration of the stories exclusive to those communities in the all-embracing collections.

In such a hometown as remembered, we climbed its trees, rode bicycles on its cracked sidewalks, and swam in its rivers, regardless of its roughness and unsightliness. There, it is easier for individuals to build a relationship in an intimate circle. Their lives look more tangible and warm. Also there, residents eat and drink traditionally and their dialect remains unchanged and intact; more distinctive and diversified urban landscapes endure.

The exhibition extends its stories of small cities to Ergun in Inner Mongolia, Zhanjiang in Guangdong, Yantai in Shandong, Dandong in Liaoning, Yongzhou in Hunan, Huzhou in Zhejiang, Luodian in Guizhou, Jinjiang in Fujian, Handan in Hebei, Neijiang, Gulin and Pixian in Sichuan, and Pinggu and Yanjiao near Beijing, among others. Those small cities and towns are geographically distant and emotionally intimate. The sense of hometown and localism is not concluded from the unique experience in any single town; it is a universal value instead

Not everyone was born in a small town, though in every man there is a small town
