新中国70年印迹——“中国武器”为国家安全护航

70 Years' Imprint of New China --"Chinese Weapons" escort national security

In the 1950s, the new China, still reeling from the war, needed quick progress to develop itself as a force to reckon with. Given the tense international situation, a nuclear attack was hardly a far fetched possibility. Therefore, the first generation of leaders of China made strategic decisions to develop atomic bombs and sophisticated weapons for national defense.

To protect their country, a large number of outstanding scientists and technicians worked diligently and managed to break  through the cutting-edge technology in a short time, relying entirely on their grit even though the economy was struggling, working conditions were far from satisfactory and the country didn’t have much of a technological foundation. But China made its presence felt with a bang. On October 16, 1964, China successfully tested its first indigenous atomic bomb, becoming only the fifth country in the world to possess one. Then, on June 17, 1967, China's first hydrogen bomb explosion test was also successful. On April 24, 1970, China's first man-made satellite, Dongfanghong-1 — named after a song dedicated to Chairman Mao — made its way to space, signaling to the heavens that China was shedding its image of a poor and underdeveloped country.

Successful testing of two kinds of bombs and an advanced satellite had elevated China's international status. As the country rejoiced in its newfound glory, the dream of a stronger China also started taking shape.

On December 26, 1970, the "Long March 1" nuclear submarine was launched successfully. This was the first nuclear submarine independently developed by China and the country became the fifth in the world to own nuclear submarines. In December 1971, Jinan, the first homemade missile destroyer, joined the naval sequence and achieved a milestone in the leap from imitation to independent research and development of Chinese missile destroyers.

In the new century, China's dream of strong military power is gradually becoming a reality. China's national defense forces are also moving towards modernization, science and technology, and even intellectualization.

Liaoning Aircraft Carrier is the first aircraft carrier in China that can carry fixed-wing aircraft. At present, the operational capability of Liaoning Fleet indicates that China’s maritime defense and the oceangoing capability meet international standards. In April 2017, China launched an indigenous aircraft carrier. The new generation of aircraft carriers has greatly improved in all aspects. In the future, along with Liaoning ships they will be the backbone of safeguarding China's territorial sea sovereignty.

At the Zhuhai Air Show in 2018, J-20 gave a wonderful performance. J-20 is the fifth generation fighter developed by China. It has not just the complete interceptor function, but also the early warning and command functions as well as long-range bombing ability. On land, along with the J-20, the Type 99 tank is the main battle tank independently developed by China and a strong example of the army's weaponry.

For decades, China has persisted in accelerating the modernization of national defense and the army through independent innovation. From "two bombs and one satellite" to a new generation of aircraft carriers, China's navy, army and air force equipment has been on the path of progress and overall improvement, providing a strong guarantee of maintaining national security and unity and holistic development of a well-rounded society.
