Originally life-sustaining skills grew into crafts and art. The changes in aesthetics, ethics and morals are reflected here. People describe this change differently, in culturally pessimistic dystopias or in post-humanistic utopias.
The title comes from the still life "Skills" by the composer Sven Helbig. In the style of baroque vanitas painting, this shows not only the usual attributes of the genre, but also a vaccination bottle, a skateboard and an iPhone under the castrated protective gesture of Hermes, the messenger of the gods. She refers to the sheet music with Strauss' setting of Nietzsche's "Also Sprach Zarathustra". The deformed Hermes reveals a double dubiousness: that of the divine idea and that of man's self-overcoming without God as proclaimed by Nietzsche.
The question remains as to what all people on earth can connect with in today's secular present after thousands of years of cultural history. It is peace, one should think. We would have to have the skills for it - after all that was.
SKILLS FOR PEACE lives in this field - between anthem and melancholy.
Points of Resistance IV / SKILLS FOR PEACE is the final exhibition in the historic Zionskirche in Berlin before the church is closed for several years of renovation work. It takes place parallel to the Berlin Gallery Weekend April 29 – May 1, 2022.
