Org. Setting and Reporting 

The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

Under the direct supervision of the Climate Change Coordinator in ROLAC, the intern will work within a small team and be highly involved in day-to-day activities. The intern will be involved in climate change projects being currently implemented by UN Environment, such as the Regional Gateway for Technology Transfer and Climate Change Action (REGATTA, http://www.cambioclimatico-regatta.org), Microfinance for Ecosystem based Adaptation (MEbA, http://unepmeba.org/), Urban Ecosystem Based Adaptation, and provide support in the preparation of project documents related to the National Adaptation Plans and Technical assistances for the Climate Technology Centre & Network (CTCN).

The internship will have a strong focus on adaptation to climate change projects/programmes in the region. 

The UN Environment/Latin America and the Caribbean Office/ Disasters and Conflicts Subprogramme internship is for 6 months. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.


Responsibilities               

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

The intern will work with UNEP-Latin America and the Caribbean Office’s, under the supervision of the Climate Change Coordinator and the activities to be carried out/support within the framework of this internship are:

1.Research and analysis on the status of climate change policies and strategies, requiring desktop research, communications with project partners and communications with relevant ministries.

2.Development of analysis, briefings and presentations for global, regional, and national workshops and seminars on climate change. When required, the intern will also support the general organization of events, including sending of invitations to participants/speakers, developing agendas, and printing of materials.

3.Support partnership building with climate change stockholders, including international agencies; national governments; bi-lateral donors; and environmental organizations. The intern will support the development of presentations for meetings with prospective partners and development of project proposals. 

4.Support the development of communications including that of electronic newsletters while also managing a contact database for countries interested in developing new climate change initiatives.

5.Support the development, revision, and implementation of Climate Change Adaptation projects/programmes in the region.

6.Perform other related duties as requested.

Education                

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a.  Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; 

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

The candidate should have strong analytical skills, and sound knowledge of climate change, environmental policies, natural resources management  and/or a related area of studies.

               

Work Experience                

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.  

             

Languages                

Excellent writing and communication skills in English and Spanish are required. Working knowledge of other UN official languages is desirable.
