Org. Setting and Reporting    

 The Special Adviser on the Preparations of the 75th Anniversary of  the United Nations and his office will support the Secretary-General  in coordinating the preparation for the commemoration of the 75th  anniversary of the United Nations in 2020 and related celebrations,  through a system-wide process of consultations and reflections on the  role of the United Nations in advancing international co-operation and  in supporting Member States' ability to respond to emerging challenges  and frontier issues.


The Special Adviser will liaise and work with Secretariat entities in  support of the inter-governmental consultations on the commemoration  of the 75th anniversary led by co-facilitators appointed by the  President of the General Assembly and future inter-governmental  processes. He will also draw on expertise within the Secretariat and  wider United Nations system to further develop proposals for the  Secretary-General on themes and events allowing for reflection on the  contribution the Organization can make to the future that we aspire to  based on the goals enshrined in the Charter. To this end, he will  facilitate consultations with civil society, youth representatives,  academia and the private sector.


The Special Adviser will also continue to support the  Secretary-General on issues related to frontier technologies to ensure  the follow-up to the High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation.


This internship is located in the office of the Special Adviser on  the Preparations for the Commemoration of the Seventy-Fifth  Anniversary of the United Nations. The programme is unpaid and  full-time, i.e. an intern is expected to work five days per week (9:00  a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) for an initial duration of three months, carrying  out his/her tasks under the supervision of a staff member - the supervisor.



Responsibilities

Within the delegated authority the Administration intern will perform  the following duties:


- Assistance in drafting and preparing various documents, including  presentations, videos, and written documents.


- Providing logistic and substantive support for the organization of  events and meetings, produce meetings summaries, assist in follow-up  and implementation of tasks.


- Providing general office support (processing, drafting and  finalizing correspondence and other communications; setting up and  maintaining files/records, organizing meetings, etc.).


- All other tasks as assigned.


- Observation of all applicable rules, regulations, instructions,  procedures and directives of the Organization notwithstanding their  status as described in section 4 of the UN Internship Programme  Administrative Instructions ST/AI/2000/9 & ST/AI/2005/11.


- Providing the receiving departments/offices with a copy of all  materials prepared by them during the internship. The UN shall be  entitled to all property rights, including but not limited to patents,  copyrights and trademarks, with regard to material which bears a  direct relation to; or is made in consequence of, the services  provided under the internship. At the request of the UN, the interns  shall assist in securing such property rights and transferring them to  the UN in compliance with the requirements of the applicable law.


- Show respect the impartiality and independence required of the UN  and of the receiving department/office and shall not seek or accept  instructions regarding the services performed under the internship  agreement from any Government or from any authority external to the UN.


- Unless otherwise authorized by the appropriate official in the  receiving department/office, they may not communicate at any time to  the media or to any institution, person, Government or any other  external source any information which has become known to them by  reason of their association with the UN or the receiving  department/office, that they know or ought to have known has not been  made public. They may not use any such information without the written  authorization of the appropriate official, and such information may  never be used for personal gain. These obligations also apply after  the end of the internship with the UN; and refrain from any conduct  that would adversely reflect on the UN or on the receiving  department/office and will not engage in any activity which is  incompatible with the aims and objectives of the UN.

Ability to diplomatically handle sensitive situations  with target audiences and cultivate productive relationships.  Knowledge of relevant internal policies and business  activities/issues. Education     

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship  Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: 

(1)  be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree  or equivalent, or higher); 

(2) be enrolled in the final academic year  of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or  equivalent); or 

(3) have graduated with a university degree (as  defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a  one year period of graduation.


Work Experience  

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for  participation in the programme. However, specialized experience in  various professional fields is an asset.



Languages      

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations  Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is  required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
