Org. Setting and Reporting


The Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar ( “ IIMM ” ) invites applications for analysis internships starting in January 2022 (exact date to be determined) on a rolling basis. The position is located within the Collection, Analysis and Sharing Section ( “ CASS ” ) of the IIMM, based in Geneva, Switzerland. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely.


Internships with the IIMM are unpaid and full-time. Core working hours for interns are Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 18:00 (in the time zone in which the intern is located). The duration of an internship with the IIMM can range from a minimum of three (3) months to a maximum of six (6) months, according to the needs of the IIMM.

Responsibilities


Interns will have the opportunity to work closely with the analysts, legal officers and investigators in CASS. The duties of interns may include, but are not limited to, conducting research and preparing analyses on various issues relating to the situation in Myanmar; contributing to the preparation of briefing papers, reports and/or public information materials; assisting in the compilation and review of information, documentation and evidence; proof-reading and editing documents; and drafting meeting records.

Education


Applicants for an internship with the United Nations must meet one of the following requirements:


(a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);


(b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent); or


(c) have graduated with a first or second university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.


Interested candidates may be pursuing or have pursued their degree in areas such as human rights, gender studies, economics, anthropology, history, linguistics, political science, psychology, social sciences, finance, open-source intelligence or other fields.


In addition, interested candidates must:


- be computer literate in standard software applications;


- have a demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and


- have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a tolerance of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience


No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.


Experience working in a multi-cultural international work environment, conducting research and/or handling sensitive or confidential information is desirable.

Languages


English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat, for this position fluency in English is required.


Knowledge of other languages, particularly a Myanmar language (e.g. Burmese, Rohingya, Rakhine, Shan, Chin or Kachin), is desirable.


NOTE: “ Fluency ” equals a rating of “ fluent ” in all four areas (speak, read, write and understand) and “ Knowledge of ” equals a rating of “ fluent ” in two of the four areas.

Assessment

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

The Cover Note must include:


- Dates of availability for full-time work.


- Title of degree you are currently pursuing or recently completed.


- Graduation date (when will you be graduating/ have graduated from the programme?).


- IT skills and programmes that you are proficient in.


- Explain why you think you are a good fit for this internship and how your studies and/or experience would allow you to contribute to the Mechanism ’ s work.


In your online Personal History Profile, be sure to include all past work and volunteer experiences, IT skills, and three references.


There should be no expectation of employment by the United Nations or the IIMM upon completion of the internship.


Interns are responsible for all internship-related expenses that they incur. The United Nations accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Therefore, upon award of an internship, interns are responsible for securing adequate insurance coverage and are required to sign and return a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of these conditions of service.


A person who is the child or sibling of a staff member shall not be eligible to apply for an internship at the United Nations. An applicant with any other family relationship to a staff member may be engaged as an intern, provided that they shall not be assigned to the same work unit of the staff member nor placed under the direct or indirect supervision of the staff member. For purposes of this instruction, “ child ” means (i) the child of a staff member; (ii) the child of the spouse of a staff member (step-child); and (iii) the spouse of a child of a staff member or a staff member ’ s spouse (son- or daughter-in-law). “ Sibling ” includes the child of both or either parent of a staff member and the child of the spouse of a parent of a staff member (that is, also half- and step-sibling).


Candidates of certain nationalities must obtain a visa authorizing their stay in Switzerland before they depart for Geneva to begin their internship. While this is the overall responsibility of the selected candidate, the IIMM will provide information and supporting documents in this regard.


**In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.
