Org. Setting and Reporting


The internship is located in the Radio and Television Section, Information Service of the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG).

The internship is for a minimum duration of three (3) months and can be extended up to six (6) months depending on the needs of the Service.

The internship is UNPAID and fulltime, and interns work five (5) days per week (40 hours) under the overall supervision of the Chief of the Radio and Television Section.

Daily tasking on news and content production issues takes place under the guidance and supervision of one or more of the Section’s News/Features/Multimedia content Producers.

Responsibilities


The intern will be responsible for the following duties:

• Support UNTV and UN News/Multimedia content producers with research on newsworthy events at the United Nations/Palais des Nations and more broadly in International Geneva; organise interviews for UNTV productions, short features and series (SDG Studio, “Geneva Witness” or other features, anniversaries/campaigns, etc.), and other video content, as required. Under the guidance of a producer, the interview may coordinate with interviewees, help conduct interviews, edit clips, and liaise with the UN Geneva social media focal point for distribution.

Support Chief of Section in drafting proposals, collecting and presenting data, organizing meetings, coordinating follow-up.

Attend UN Geneva press briefings and produce media content – under the supervision and guidance of a UN producer -- by editing news clips, compiling shotlists and assisting in the production of transcripts, subtitles and/or storylines on tight deadlines.

Pre-edit newsworthy coverage of press conferences, stakeouts, events and conferences at the Palais des Nations for web, broadcast or social media distribution, under the guidance of (and for approval by) a producer.

Support the section’s work with research, presentations material, data input, and perform other tasks as required by the Chief of Section.

Perform interviews under the guidance of your line manager that can be produced for UN Geneva and UN News, select audio soundbites and information around newsworthy events at the Palais. Assist in the research, writing and editing of bulletins for news services.

Support the section’s work with research, presentational material including gifs for social media using Adobe Premiere Pro (guidance will be provided), data inputting, and performing other tasks as required by the Chief of Section.

Communication: ability to draft clearly and concisely, good written and oral language skills.

Teamwork: good interpersonal skills, ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from different national and cultural backgrounds to achieve organizational goals.

Client Orientation: considers all those to whom services are provided to be 'clients' and seeks to see things from client's point of view.

Education


To qualify for an internship with the United Nations, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

(b) be enrolled in, or have competed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).

Interested candidates must be pursuing or have pursued their degree in areas related to this Job Opening.

In addition, interested candidates must:

Be computer literate in standard software applications including MS suite (Word, Excel, Power Point);

Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and,

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience


No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages


English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

For this internship, fluency in either English or French is required with working knowledge of the other desirable.

  • Date of availability.

  • Title of degree that you are currently pursuing.

  • Graduation date (when will you be/have graduating/graduated from the programme?).

  • IT skills and programmes in which you are proficient.

  • Top three areas of interest.

  • Explain why you are the best candidate for this specific internship.

  • Explain your interest in the United Nations Internship Programme.

In your online Personal History Profile, be sure to include all your past work experiences, IT skills, and three references.

There should be no expectation of employment by the United Nations upon completion of the internship.

Interns are responsible for all internship-related expenses that they incur. The United Nations accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Therefore, upon award of an internship, interns are responsible for securing adequate insurance coverage and are required to sign and return a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of these conditions of service.

A person who is the child or sibling of a staff member shall not be eligible to apply for an internship at the United Nations. An applicant who bears to a staff member any other family relationships may be engaged as an intern provided that he or she shall not be assigned to the same work unit of the staff member nor placed under the direct or indirect supervision of the staff member. For purposes of this instruction, "child" means (i) the child of a staff member; (ii) the child of the spouse of a staff member (stepchild); and (iii) the spouse of a child of a staff member or a staff member's spouse (son- or daughter-in-law). "Sibling" includes the child of both or either parent of a staff member and the child of the spouse of a parent of a staff member (that is, also half- and step-sibling).

Candidates of certain nationalities must obtain a visa authorizing their stay in Switzerland before they depart from Geneva to begin their internship. While this is the overall responsibility of the selected candidate, we will provide information and supporting documents in this regard.

**In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.
