Wang Jiajia: Endless Summer

July 15–August 20, 2023

Gallery I | SPURS Gallery, D-06, 798 Art Zone, 2 Jiuxianqiao Rd, Chaoyang District, Beijing

SPURS Gallery is pleased to present “Endless Summer,” an exhibition by Wang Jiajia on July 15, 2023. This will be his third solo exhibition with the gallery. The exhibition will present five large scale paintings and a charcoal sketch from his “Roots” series, showcasing the artist’s deep reflection of his life experiences and his expanded practice with the Chinese line drawing technique. Wang began creating this series in January 2022, and the same year in July, first introduced it to the public in his show “A Tree Cannot Pick Up Its Roots” at TANK Shanghai.

For Wang, who moved to London with his parents at age 3, the line drawing techniques which he began engaging with as a child became much more conspicuous in his recent creations. In this new series, Wang, exchanging the digital collage-based images with line drawing, further embraces the aesthetic traditions of Chinese art and connects with his trainings from his earlier years.

Playing with line drawing is like constructing a bridge, enabling Wang to generate mechanisms that open up conversations and establish balances. Through the delineation of lines, the gushing forcefulness in his images is enriched with a certain romanticism and mysteriousness. In terms of the palette, Wang continues to utilize contrasting colors — as part of the “digital generation,” he is more attracted to this sort of intense chromatic sensation and thus is adept at manipulating it. Before his strokes, he usually takes plenty of time in thinking; but once his brush touches the canvas, he completes the lines in a single movement. In “Roots,” the rhythm, colors, strokes, and spaces of his works finds balanced harmony in the line drawing structure.  The trees and vines dig deeply into the canvas. Wang keenly grasps the momentums that lines create when they travel in certain directions, and uses them to render the sprawling, upward flourishing of vegetation.

For Wang in his teenage years, Chinese shan shui painting and line drawing are like the lens of a looking glass through which he sees China. But now, they are more like roots, linking the spaces and times of cultural conflict and reconciliation that may exist in his memory or subconsciousness. Dream On, Daybreak, Don’t Run, This Is Not the End, Endless Summer: these dreamlike whispers of names are from words written impromptu on Wang’s images. “Endless Summer” — on summery afternoons when time seems frozen — will invite viewers to see feelings and thoughts grow vividly unbridled across canvases and frames.

The exhibition will be on veiw in Gallery I at SPURS Gallery until August 20, 2023.

(2020);“FOMO: Fear of Missing Out”,Tao Art Space,台北(2020);“带你飞”,博而励画廊,北京(2018);“平行现实”,德萨北京,北京(2016)。

Born in Beijing, China in 1985, Wang Jiajia has received a BA Honours Degree from Central Saint Martins College of Art& Design in 2008, and currently lives and works in Beijing.

Like many of his generation, Wang was eclipsed with the populization of the television, the advent of the Internet, and the ubiquity of pop culture. Building upon the artist’s breakthrough “Adventure” series from 2016, works combine digital collage, action painting and silkscreen printing in a confident, magnificent display. Wang's paintings seem to be full of abstract brushstrokes and heavy pigments, but each stroke does not lack in thinking. Unlike Western paintings, which starts from sketching then to color, Wang’s painting training began with drawing lines and imitating master’s work. Expressing more of a traditional concept in a new and contemporary way is one of the core creative thinking of the artist's creation.

As the artist uses the contention between creative process and outcome to shape the artwork, and consciously selects readymade images, a narrative process unfolds around the ubiquitous digital images of the contemporary landscape, presenting us with a psychic constellation of different cultures intersecting amidst conflicting elements of popular culture and classical canon.

His recent solo exhibitions include, “Endless Summer,” SPURS Gallery, Beijing (2023); “A/S/L,” DE SARTHE Gallery, Hong Kong (2023); “A Tree Cannot Pick Up Its Root,” TANK Shanghai, Project Space, Shanghai (2022);”The Sun Is in My Eyes,” Xiao Museum of Contemporary Art, Rizhao, Shandong (2021); “Elegant, Circular, Timeless,” SPURS Gallery, Beijing (2020); “FOMO: Fear of missing out,” Tao Art Space, Taipei (2020); “Pop the Champagne,” Boers-Li Gallery, Beijing (2018); “Alternate Realities,” de Sarthe Gallery, Beijing (2016). He has also participated in group exhibitions including, “Apostolic Succession,” SPURS Gallery, Beijing, (2021); “CLEAN,” SPURS Gallery, Beijing (2020); “One if by Land,” Powerlong Art Center, Xiamen (2019), etc.
