THE BULK HOUSE will continue on!
We want to have the biggest positive impact on the environment within the shortest time possible. We have realised that in order to do this, we need to place a larger % of our time online where we can reach a wider audience.
And, according to the Chinese article that went out last night, that I am now translating from, you can be rest assured that will be a lot more...

We opened in March 2018 and will close on the 20th March 2019, THE BULK HOUSE Beijing Gulou store is very proud to have been a part of Gulou's history (if these 4 walls could talk, then... then, the place would be haunted?)
During the year, we have had the pleasure of meeting many fellow zero wasters, chatted with many friends who came by the store and made many new friends (way more than Joe's brain can remember, but not enough for Carrie's crazy ability to remember every face she has met during talks, events and in store at THE BULK HOUSE. So much so that Carrie spotted a customer of ours from across a crowded room in New York and was like "That's a girl from Beijing zero waste community!" Tis a small world.)
Zero waste is not only our story, but each and every person who walked up the 5.5 steps, pulled open the door and then looked around the store with excitement, "Wow! A zero waste store!" or with bewilderment wondering "What on Earth is this store about? What is an organic cotton mesh bag for?" "How does a menstrual cup work?" To be continued...
Here we have met diving enthusiasts, a history teacher of Peking University, police officers, girls in a bad mood who want to chat, students from the Zhongxi Opera, staff of the European Untion, journalists from CCTV, Taiwanese high school students, famous zero waste bloggers from Europe, 100's of foreigners and Chinese travelling throughout China that went out of their way to come to the store just to say "Hi" and have a photo with us, primary school students, the founders of Freitag, a 5-year old Chinese boy who saw a video about us online and asked his mother to take him to our store, artists who make earrings from scrap material, young people who make vlogs, the cast of the world-famous musical, Cats (who were performing in Beijing) and a customer from Shandong that previously bought products online, came to Beijing for work and so personally brought the boxes back to us so we could reuse them again! (Now, that. is. zero. waste!)
This little dog suggested to its owner to visit THE BULK HOUSE, the owner obliged.
The once thought to be extinct marine creature landed in the store one afternoon. It later left and flapped its way to the nearby Nanluoguxiang to shout at customers for killing some its' cousins who died after swallowing discarded single-use plastic bags and straws. The creature has not been spotted since. Please keep and eye out and report any sightings to people who receive such information about sightings.

These are people who understand what they need. They love and respect the environment in which they live. They are curious about life and they embrace change. They want not only entertainment, but also meaning. They love the world and want to be a positive influence on the future. They want to leave the world in a better way than they found it.
Some helpful information
THE BULK HOUSE Gulou store is closing so that we can place a better focus online, influence a larger audience and build a larger community of zero wasters.
We will be open everyday from now until Wednesday 20th March (our store hours will be: Monday to Sunday, 12pm - 8pm) and then the store will say a final goodbye full of fond memories at 5pm on Wednesday 20th March.
We hope that this announcement can reach as many people as possible, so, we would greatly appreciate it if you could forward this article onto friends and share it on your WeChat Moments. We want to ensure that as many people as possible, who are concerned about zero waste, will know this news.
Otherwise, they will come back after the 20th March, with a reaction like this...
In the future, THE BULK HOUSE will not disappear. We will still provide zero waste goods and organize various activities both online and offline. In fact, although the closure of Gulou store is regrettable, we believe that this will open up more time for us to do bigger, better and more impactful things.
If you need zero waste products, don't worry, our online stores will still be open where you can place orders 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We've also prepared a lot of amazing new products. Please see the QR codes at the bottom of this article for our Taobao store and our Weidian store.
In the future, we will also hold some fresh and interesting activities, such as pop-up stores, swap events, composting workshops and whatever wonderful ideas may pop into our brains.
BULK ITEMS
For the bulk items that many customers come along to get at our store, we will organise for a new and convenient way for customers to still refill items such as:
- Shampoo
- Body wash／hand wash
- Laundry detergent
- Tooth powder
We will make an announcement about this in the next couple of weeks. Until then, please come along to the store to get your bulk items.
