下面我们继续本周《新概念英语2》第14课的重点句型或语法的分享。先来读一读课文：
一、课文原文
Lesson 14 Do you speak English?
I had an amusing experience last year. After I had left a small village in the south of France, I drove on to the next town. On the way, a young man waved to me. I stopped and he asked me for a lift. As soon as he had got into the car, I said good morning to him in French and he replied in the same language. Apart from a few words, I do not know any French at all. Neither of us spoke during the journey. I had nearly reached the town, when the young man suddenly said very slowly, 'Do you speak English?' As I soon learnt, he was English himself!

二、重点句型或语法
本课重点复习过去完成时的用法。在新概念第1册的119-120课，我们已经接触了过去完成时。这个时态主要表示在过去的某个时间或动作以前已经发生的动作或存在的状态，以及对过去造成的影响或结果。
基本构成为：主语+ had done，如：
By the end of last week he had finished the work. He had left when I arrived.
常用表时间的标志词，如：by the end of+过去时间点，before+过去时间点，如：
By the end of last month, work on the bridge had been completed.
Before dinner, I had finished all my homework.
本课新出现了had nearly ... when... 的句型，表示 “ 一......就...... ”，如：
I had nearly reached home when it began to rain heavily.
主句动作用过去完成时，when所在的从句动作要用一般过去时。这个句型可以与as soon as相互转换。类似的句型还有：no sooner ... than ...，hardly ... when ...
如：
We had no sooner left the room than the phone rang.
其中，否定副词短语no sooner如果提到句首会引起倒装，即：
No sooner had we left the room than the phone rang.
