It often happens in China that buying a dog turns into a nightmarish experience. The same little puppy that looked so lively in the shop window suddenly becomes sick beyond help and dies.
Last week, a couple came to Ringy001 for help while they were talking to a puppy shop about their dog's death. After understanding what had happened, Ringy's agents got angry and decided to go out of their way to help this couple who lost their dog forever.
The couple bought their puppy in Tongzhou market in Beijing for 2,400rmb and gave the girl puppy a Chinese name, “Li Ming.” Unfortunatlely the next day she became ill. Li Ming got parvovirus then after three days and more than 5000rmb in clinic costs, she died. The couple was so sad that they cried for a whole night and even during the WeChat voice call we could tell they were still grieving.
The puppy shop provided a contract basically saying that they assured the breed and the health of the dog by running a full body check in a medical organization beforehand, and that, if the dog were infected with distemper or parvovirus on the day of delivery, they could exchang it for another dog. Also if the dog passed away from disease within 3 years, the buyers could purchase the same breed of dog with a 20% discount.
This sounds like a good product sales contract, but wait...we are talking about a dog, a puppy, a living being!
Our Ringy agent had a few conversations over the phone with the shop owner--Mr. Wang (who had opened several puppy shops like this in Tongzhou). He claimed that he had informed the buyers to return the dog once they found the puppy was sick, but the buyers didn't return it.
Mr. Wang also said that he had provided a paper of the dog's quarantine certificate before the purchasing and he blamed it on the clinic. The certificate was proved to be a forgery.
At the end of the call Mr. Wang said that even if the president were to come to him for a refund, he wouldn't care. Once the dog was sold, he had no responsibility.
"Tell him that dogs are not clothes, nor products that you simply 'return' if you are not 'satisfied'. They are living beings. When they are sick what they need is professional care and assistance."

Puppies like Li Ming are called "week dogs" because they can't survive longer than one week. The “week dogs“ are usually infected with a fatal virus that causes canine distemper or parvovirus. The trick lies in a special serum that dog dealers use to delay the appearance of symptoms for three to four days. They seem fine when they are taken by their new owners, but quickly fall ill when the serum runs out in their bodies. Many puppy shops are selling this kind of pet in China. Tongzhou in Beijing is one of the biggest markets doing this kind of puppy business.

This couple who came to Ringy001 for help with this tragedy is not alone.
A poll conducted in 2011 by Beijing News found at least 30 victims who had spent a total of over 200,000 yuan ($30,000) purchasing dogs from various online stores and later treating them for illnesses.
"I had a Labrador for almost 11 years. I adopted him from a friend. He's always been ively and healthy. When I heard Li Ming's case, I felt our user's pain because I could imagine how I would feel if I lost my pet, so I decided to get on the call with the shop and find out the truth for our Ringy user.
I would like to say, please stop buying dogs from all those breeding spots or pet shops. As long as there are people buying them, businesses like this will continue to exist. And dogs will continue to be mistreated.
If you really want a pet, adoption is a better way. Those adopted pets are usually raised and cared by people who truely love animals and they would give proper vaccination to the pets."
