“阻碍、抑制”除了prevent还可以怎么说？丨写作地道表达

写作中我们经常要表达“阻碍、抑制”的含义。说到“阻碍、抑制”，我们最先想到的是 prevent，但这个词稀松平常，缺乏特色。今天我们就来讲一讲，除了prevent，有哪些让阅卷老师眼前一亮的表达！

一、thwart

2020年4月11日的《经济学人》中有篇文章讲到了韩国的防弹少年团，里面有这么一句话：

Dionysus forces his followers to abandon rigid patterns of thought or behaviour that threaten to thwart their development.狄俄尼索斯迫使他的追随者放弃那些可能会阻碍他们发展的僵化的思考模式或行为模式。

thwart 英文解释是 to prevent sb from doing what they want to do，相对来说比较常见，可以完美替换 prevent.

举个例子，前几天传出消息说，去年我国出生率跌破1%，我们可以造句：

China's declining fertility rate will thwart further development.中国不断下降的出生率会阻碍进一步发展。

二、hobble

2020年4月4日的《经济学人》封面文章讨论了在疫情期间，各国政府在“生死”和“经济”之间做出的选择，文中有这么一句话：

When China shuts its borders to foreigners almost completely, it stops imported infections but it also hobbles foreign businesses.中国几乎全面禁止外国人入境后，挡住了外来感染，但也阻碍了外国企业（的发展）。

hobble 本义是指  walk with difficulty “蹒跚、跛行”，引申为“阻碍、妨碍”（阻碍某人的腿），看一下英文解释：to make it more difficult for sb to do sth or for sth to happen.

我们造个句子，在“创新”或“教育”的写作话题中，我们就可以说：

The spoon-feeding education can hobble creativity and innovation.填鸭式教育会阻碍创造力和创新。

spoon-feeding 字面意思是“拿勺子喂”，即“填鸭式教育”。

三、inhibit

2021年4月10日的《经济学人》中有篇文章分析了当前全球的就业环境，文中有这么一句话：

Repatriating supply chains, as Mr Biden would, will inhibit competition and grind down living standards.

迁回供应链（拜登会这么做）会抑制竞争、降低生活水平。

repatriate 的意思是 to send or bring sb back to their own country，比如：

After the war, prisoners were repatriated.战后，战俘被遣返回国。

文中 Repatriating supply chains 指“把供应链迁回国内”。

inhibit 是外刊中很常见的单词，相当于 prevent「阻止、抑制」，举个例子：

An unhappy family life may inhibit children's learning.不幸福的家庭生活可能会阻碍儿童的学习。

《经济学人》中曾有篇文章谈到了疫情后的商业环境，文中有句话也用到了这个词：

The exit path from lockdowns will be precarious, with uneasy consumers, a stop-start rhythm that inhibits efficiency, and tricky new health protocols.消费者惶惶不安，复工节奏走走停停，抑制了生产效率，而且新的治疗方案纷繁复杂，这些都使解封之路危险重重。

inhibit efficiency 的意思是：抑制生产效率。

grind 作动词表示“磨碎、碾碎”，grind down 则引申出“降低、摧毁”的含义，比如《卫报》中的一句话：

How does it grind down the human capacities for hope, trust and wellbeing?它是如何摧毁人类的希望、信任和幸福的能力的?

《纽约时报》里有句话也出现了这个词：

This illustrates China's great strength: its ability to relentlessly grind down costs by combining high labor efficiency with wages that remain extraordinarily low.这体现了中国的巨大优势：它有能力把高劳动效率与仍然非常低的工资水平结合起来，从而持续降低成本。

grind down costs 可以当成一个固定搭配记下来，表示“降低成本”，可完美替换 reduce costs.

四、discourage

我们先看《纽约时报》里的一个句子：

Right now, the rules — on campaign finance, redistricting, even ballot access — overwhelmingly discourage competition.目前，有关竞选资金、重新划分选区、甚至投票的规则都极大地阻碍了竞争。

discourage 是 encourage 的反义词，encourage 除了“鼓励”讲，还可以表示“促进”，比如前段时间关于电子游戏的讨论非常激烈，很多家长认为，有些电子游戏会助长儿童的暴力行为，我们就可以说：

Parents believe that some video games encourage violent behaviour in young children. 

discourage 作为它的反义词，就有了“阻碍、阻止”的意思，《经济学人》中曾有篇文章，讨论了“科技会推动社会发展还是带来更多社会问题”，文中有这么一句话：

Fears that robots will steal people’s jobs may prompt politicians to tax them, for example, to discourage their use.例如，人们担心机器人会抢走他们的工作，可能会因此促使政客们对机器人征税，以阻止使用机器人。

五、barrier

barrier 是名词，表达“阻碍”时，我们可以说 be/remain a barrier to，这里的to是介词，后面加名词或动名词。我们看两个例句：

Lack of confidence is a psychological barrier to success. 缺乏信心是阻碍成功的心理因素。（可用于个人品质类的写作中）

Problems with childcare remain the biggest barrier to women succeeding at work.儿童看护问题依然是女性争取事业成功的最大障碍。（可用于女性地位的写作中）

六、put sand in the wheels of...

《新概念四》第八课 Trading Standards 讲到了国际贸易，文中有这么一句话：

These days, it is differences in national regulations, far more than tariffs, that put sand in the wheels of trade between rich countries.今日，正是各国条例的差异，而非关税，阻碍了发达国家间的贸易。

其实这篇文章出自1997年5月的一篇《经济学人》。

put sand in the wheels of...可先从字面角度去理解，其字面意思是“把沙子放到...的轮子里”，我们可以想象一下，如果把沙子放到轮子里，车就会难以前行，所以可引申为“抑制、阻碍”。这个表达更有画面感，可用于口语或应试作文中，但不适用于学术类文章（如论文）。

英国《卫报》中也用过这个表达，讲的是“911”事件对全球化的影响，原文是这么说的：

And the post-11 September environment has put sand in the wheels of this unstoppable process of globalisation.“9·11”后的环境也阻碍了势不可挡的全球化进程。

与 put sand in the wheels of 相反的是 oil/grease the wheels，oil / grease 作名词是“油、润滑油”的意思，此处作动词则表示“涂油、抹润滑油”，所以 oil/grease the wheels of 字面意思是“给...的轮子涂润滑油”，即“促进”，比如 oil the wheels of globalisation 促进全球化，oil the wheels of the economy 推动经济发展：
