Africans Rush To Donate Blood For A Chinese Patient In Shenyang

On November 13th, a critically ill patient with cirrhosis and gastrointestinal hemorrhage encountered a difficult problem in Shenyang. She was in urgent need of blood transfusion. The problem is that there is an extremely rare antibody in her blood. The rate of occurrence of the said antibody within Chinese population is only 3 in 10,000 people. The doctors did not find the match in the blood bank.

At a critical moment, one suggestion came: This antibody is more common within the African population, as a result, a life-saving campaign among African friends in Shenyang began.

The doctors at Shengjing Hospital never gave up looking for a  match. Wang Qiushi, the director of the Department of Transfusion contacted many experts and professors in China and learned that this antibody is more common in the African population, and the success rate of blood matching is relatively high at 1 in 3 people.

After getting this clue, Wang Qiushi immediately contacted the Foreign Affairs Office of China Medical University looking for international students. This was the fastest way that Wang Qiu thought of finding Africans.

The news received the attention of the African students in Shenyang, and a group of 20 African students immediately rushed to the Shengjing Hospital for blood tests.

On the early morning of November 18, the blood sample of one Shenyang Medical College student was found to match that of a patient.

But the problem came after the health check, the doctors found that the matched student is anemic and should not donate blood. Facing the disappointment, the foreign student told the accompanying teacher: "I can donate, even if it is only 200ml."

However, in order to protect the health of the blood donor, the doctors rejected her request.

The work of saving the patient's life is still going on. More international students are rushing to Shengjing Hospital. Even one international student who has graduated from Northeastern University went for a test. "After hearing the news, I didn't hesitate, just sign, draw blood," he said. The touching scene continued in Shengjing Hospital, and the good news came again - a Guinean student with a successful blood match!

Such a touching scene made Wang Enguang, a teacher at the School of International Exchange Office at the Northeastern University, feel that goodness is in everyone's heart. Hao Qing, director of the First Department of Gastroenterology at Shengjing Hospital said: "Thanks to the blood donors, thanks for the love of our African students and their contribution in a foreign country, we love you!"

The Shenyang Evening News reporter asked Shengjing Hospital about the progress. Up to now, the successful students with blood matching have temporarily donated blood, and this life-saving campaign is still going on.
