Smiling Zone
Smiling as the most usual facial expression in daily life is not coming as easy as people thought. At least, 16 pieces of muscles on the face are required to create a smiley. Since World Smile Day (the first Friday of October each year) was decided in honour of Harvey Ross Ball who was an artist creating a smiley face in 1963 to boost employee morale, this beautiful look has been rooted in people's minds and continues to bring joy and warmth years later. Smiling and laughter are not only the reflection of felicity, but also can bring pieces of more power to people not going well.
The Nanyan News Agency English Team has recorded the smiling from PKUers on campus, hope you may receive the happiness delivered by them.
WHY smiling?
As one of the basic emotional representations of Homo sapiens (human in Latin), "smile" is never leaving us away. So, what exactly is the meaning and function of a smile?
LIU Hongyan from STL:
Smiling is a way of showing your feelings. It can not only show your happy mood but also show your frustration. Smiling when you are unhappy can also regulate your emotions.
LI Yi from PHBS:
I think smiling can reshape our mindset. When we encounter troubles, we can smile then the world and people we looking at may get in a different way, and the adversity maybe will turn around.
ZHU Ge from STL:
Smiling can be a good way to resolve the awkwardness between people. It is also a signal to release goodwill to others.
More than this, the role of smiling is indicated in the positive implication for the psychological level, as well as in the physiological aspects. There is a Chinese proverb that says, "One laugh makes people ten years younger," implying that smiling is an effective way to express friendliness, simultaneously slowing down aging and is beneficial to physical health. Smiling regularly promotes various physiological alterations in the body, reducing stress, improving immunity, further regulating blood pressure and loosening the tightening blood vessels, leading to whole muscle and mind relaxation. At the same time, the body's immune system works better when people are relaxed, effectively preventing the flu and colds. Especially during this season changing period which can easily cause flu and fever, as we only have two seasons to change in Shenzhen.
Mark Twain once said human beings do have an effective weapon, which is laughter. Please take care of yourself, keep healthy, and most importantly, do not forget to smile! :D
