Explore Amazing Yuanyang Rice Terrace & Feel Authentic Life in Historic Town

Kunming, located in the middle of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau at an altitude of 1900 meters, is the capital and the largest city in Yunnan Province. Known as “the City of Eternal Spring”, Kunming is suitable to be visited all year round. As a window city to tour Yunnan, Kunming has a cultural blend of 26 ethnic minority groups as well as breathtaking natural scenery.

To be frank, Kunming is usually served as the gateway city to transfer to its amazing surrounding wonders. You won’t miss the Stone Forest which brings you into a world of peculiar-looking stones. If you are interested in photography and rice terrace scenery, extending to Yuanyang Rice Terrace to have an incredible view of the most beautiful sculptural line in the world made by Hani ethnic people.

Puzhehei' in the Yi language, means ‘a pond teeming with fish and shrimp. The Puzhehei Scenic Area is 13 kilometers (8.1 miles) northwest of Qiubei County Town, Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Minorities Autonomous Prefecture. As a typical karst landscape, the scenic area abounds in beautiful waters and green mountains which are very similar to and even prettier than those in Guilin. Therefore, Puzhehei is praised as being ‘a unique pastoral scene in China’.'

Tourists can take a traditional canoe made by the Yi people to admire the stunning spectacle. Simple cottages in good condition, surrounded with cut bamboo, are situated by the lakes. Five ethnic minorities, the Yi, Zhuang, Miao, Yao and Sani, live nearby and preserve their old folk-customs and cultures. Away from the hustle and bustle of big cities, the Puzhehei Scenic Area offers people a fairyland with a tranquil environment and beautiful scenery.

Yuanyang Rice Terraces has been a masterpiece of the ingenuity of the Hani people for generations. Southern Ailao Mountain, with this typical tiered landscape, is famed for its unique frontier scenery.

The Hani people's ancestors came to this steep mountain area 2,500 years ago. In their struggle against the difficult terrain they successfully established the terraces, where they grew rice in order to make a living. The technology of developing fertile land on rugged mountain slopes didn't spread all over China and Southeast Asia until 14th century.

The creativity of the Hani people turned this mountain area into one of artistic beauty. In recognition, the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) emperor granted the title of 'Skillful Sculptor' to Hani people and their good reputation was passed down from generation to generation. At present, known as 'land sculpture' the terraced fields have been being officially acknowledged by UNESCO as a World Cultural and Natural Heritage site.

Day1 Arrive at Kunming, Live in Kunming City and then it is your own time to explore this city.

Welcome to Kunming! Upon arrival, Your guide will help you check in. The rest of today is on your own to explore this beautiful city. Have a good sleep tonight.

Day2 Kunming-Stone Forest-Puzhehei. Live in Puzhehei Village.

Transfer: By Treaveling bus from Kunming to Stone Forest, 86KM 2hours, from Stone Forest to Puzhehei, 190KM 3 hours.

Accommodation: Overnight in Puzhehei, Local Famly Hostel.

Please Note: Puzhehei Village is a small village, the hotel standards couldnt match with the big city.

On this day, your guide and driver will pick you up at your hotel. Later, drive 85 km to the typical Karst landform - Stone Forest. Walk into the Greater Stone Forest, marvel at groups of gray-black stone peaks and climb up a pavilion to have a panoramic view of the intricate stone forest. Visit the Lesser Stone Forest and listen to the legendary story of “Ashima”. It will be a real treat to visit the extraordinary natural stone forest. We will visit this place for 4-5 hours

Walking through the site, visitors marvel at the natural stone masterpieces and are bewitched by the intricate formations. The magnificent, strange and steep landscape creates countless labyrinthine vistas, including:

Greater Stone Forest, Lesser Stone Forest and Naigu Stone Forest, all of which feature stones in various formations. Animals, plants, and even human figures can be found here. Some are elegant, some are rugged, and each is lifelike with its own distinguishing characteristics.

Subterranean Stone Forest in Zhiyun Cave, distributed underground among several caves and occupying a total area of about three square kilometers (720 acres). Qifeng Cave, composed of Penfeng Cave, Hongxi Spring and an underground river. From August to November, gales lasting two to three minutes sweep out of the cave every 30 minutes.

Long Lake is a karsts lake that is three kilometers (two miles) long but only 300 meters (zero point two miles) wide. The lake features underwater stalagmites and stalactites and a small island in the center of the water.

Then, drive about 3h to Puzhehei, then check in the hotels, the rest of today is your time to find your local food for dinner.

Day3 Puzhehei-Yuanyuan, Live in Yuanyang Village

Transfer: Travel nearby Puzhehei and then go to Yuanyang Village

Accommodation: Overnight in Yuanyang Village.

Please Note: There is no entrance tickets of Puzhehei, but if you want boating along the river, it is around 170RMB for 50mins.

Today is your time to enjoy this peacful village, Puzhehei. Once reaching Puzhehei, the fantastic water fighting game cannot be missed. If you want to participate, you'll need a plastic barrel, a one-off rain coat and a water gun. Also, cell phones, cameras and other electronic devices should be protected during the game. If you love photography, this wonderful scenic spot is a paradise for you. Bring a high quality camera. There are neither banks nor ATMs in the scenic spot, so bring some small denomination cash.

Among the peaks there are more than 200 karst caves, of which about 80 large ones can be visited. In the deep, quiet caves, milky stalagmites grow thickly and steles stand in great numbers. Outside, the vast waters are dotted in summer with shining lotus flowers and boundless lotus leaves, enhancing the picturesque scenery.

Today may be the most difficulty day for this trip, we need to travel around 330km and more than 5 hours to arrvie Yuangyang Senic Spot, about 8pm we can arrive, so prepare your dinner in advance.

Day4 Visit Yuanyang For Whole Day, Live in Yuanyang

Transfer: Travel around Yuanyang

Accommodation: Overnight in Arxan City or Arxan Forest Park.

Today is your time to enjoy one of the most beautiful Rice Terraces: Yuangyang. The scenery of the terraced fields in Yuanyang is at its best from November to the following April.

Taking a tour to Yuanyang Terraces in winter is amazing, since the fields are full of water, composing a colorful painting. Yuangyang Senic spot has 3 main visiting areas as below:

Duoyishu Scenic Area: This is the most beautiful natural and cultural landscape of Yuanyang Terraces, and it is the best place to go if you wish to photograph the sunrise. The terraces in this scenic area, including Duoyishu, Aichun, and Dawazhe, are more than 6.7 square kilometers (1647.4 acres) in total. Sunrise provides the most beautiful sight in Duoyishu as the morning there highlights the superlative dynamic landscape.

As a kind suggestion, we recommend that you can pay special attention to the changing color of the water during the early morning sunrise. As the reflections and shadows are constantly changing, the visual impact can be overwhelming.

Bada Scenic Area: It is the biggest attraction in terms of acreage of Yuanyang Terraces and the best of the sunset scenery can be seen here. The terraces here include the Qingkou, Quanfuzhuang, Malizhai, Zhulu and other contiguous areas extending over more than 9.3 square kilometers (2306.3 acres). The Bada terraces at sunset are truly amazing and the incessantly changing colors will make you feel that you are in a magical kingdom.

Laohuzui (the Tiger Mouth) Scenic Area: The third dimension and the colorific hierarchy of Laohuzui is the most intense. The colors are as though they have been painted by an artist, while the terraced slopes are more rugged. The lowest section of the terrace is the most attractive and the outline resembles a galloping horse.

Stay overnight in Yuanyang.

Day5 Yuanyang-Jianshui Ancient Town-Kunming, Supposed to arrive around 18:00

Transfer: By Treaveling bus from Yuanyang to Jianshui, 80KM; from Jianshui to Kunming 181Km.

Please Note: If you book the flight back to your city, you would better book your flight later than 9:00pm

In this morning, you will head to Jianshui County, about 3.5 hours’ driving. After arriving in Jianshui, you’ll pay a visit to Jianshui Ancient Town which is reputed as “Museum of Ancient Buildings and Residential Houses” with a history of about 1200 years.

Stroll along the old street and see kinds of old wells to witness how water pays an important role in making the famous Jianshui stinky Tofu. Reach Chaoyang Tower to see this imposing Ming edifice which is modeled on the Yellow Crane Town in Wuhan and Yueyang Tower in Hunan and bears more than a passing resemblance to Tian’anmen in Beijing.

After that, you'll be driven back to Kunming. After arriving in Kunming, transfer to airport or train station to catch your flight/train (after 22:00) to next destination or back home.
