Roadkill
10 natural pictures per week,
and here is No.139.
Turdus merula
(Eurasian Common Blackbird)
F/2.2,5mm,1/287s,ISO97
This Eurasian blackbird is extremely common, and its tendency to reside in urbanised areas means it lives with the constant risk of road accidents. In this photograph we can see the true danger of these incidents, which are most often fatal for the birds, but rarely have serious consequences for humans.
Niltava grandis
(Large Niltava)
We can still see the beauty of the large Niltava bird's plumage in this photograph, despite its lifeless form. This example of roadkill shows how even species which usually remain in the canopies of tropical forests, like this one, can fall victim to road accidents closer to the ground.
Deinagkistrodon acutus
(Chinese Moccasin)
F/2.2,4mm,1/334s,ISO25
The forest habitat of Chinese Moccasin is frequently built over with wide roads, which present a danger for all native species in the area. The snakes possibly have to cross the roads in order to find rodents to feed on, or prospective mates.

Rhabdophis subminiatus
(Red-necked Keelback)
F/5.6,420mm,1/25s,ISO640
The physical adaptations of the Tiger Keelback make them a force toreckon with in the wild, with not one but two points of venom excretion, through their back teeth and behind the skull. The snakes are still liable to become victims themselves, when they occasionally meet with manmade dangers such as cars.

Lycodon rufozonatum
(Red-banded Snake)
F/4,70mm,1/250s,ISO800
The red-banded snake, sometimes called the Asian King snake, is a non-venomous species. Being extremely common in parts of East Asia, many parts of the snakes' typical habitat now have roads built over them. Although not frequent enough to threaten the species' population, fatalities like this one are always a risk for the individuals.
Marmota himalayana
(Himalayan Marmot)
F/1.8,50mm,1/8000s,ISO160
Even within the majorly inaccessible habitat of the Himalayan Marmots, there is still the threat of fatal road accidents. Although the species prefer to remain in their deep burrows, they must occasionally venture over dangerous roads, without availability of animal passage ways.
Spermophilus undulatus
(Long-tailed Ground Squirrel)
F/2.2,4mm,1/1570s,ISO25
As suggested by its name, the Long-tailed Ground Squirrel tends to remain on the ground when moving through its habitat, lacking the tree climbing abilities of other squirrels. This perhaps puts them at higher risk of accidents such as this one, as they attempt to cross roads when completing necessary tasks such as locating food or mates.
“草原上的路随着经济建设越来越好,车速也随之越来越快,然而小动物们来不及‘进化’。触碰危险的边缘那么一点点,这只黄鼠整个夏季的梦想就没了。” (by朱敬恩)
Meles leucurus
(Asian Badger)
F/2.2, 4mm, 1/160s, ISO50
The nocturnal behaviour of Asian badgers may put them at even higher risk of accidents, if late night drivers fail to spot them in the road. As with other species which have adapted to thrive in urban spaces, certain Asian badger communities are frequently in contact with humans and their vehicles.
Arctonyx collaris
(Hog Badger)
F/5,150mm,1/1250s,ISO9000
Although they may possess many qualities suited to predation and defence, such as sharp claws and a strong jaw, Hog badgers are also vulnerable to the danger of the roads. Like other species of badger, they also have nocturnal tendencies which leads to risky encounters with cars driving in the dark.
Mustela sibirica
(Siberian weasel)
F/1.9,4mm,1/1618s,ISO103
Siberian Weasels, although usually remaining solitary within an area of territory, have also been known to migrate due to food shortage, and have been recorded travelling up to 8km at one time. These movements are nocturnal, and can include crossing of roads; the result, as we can see here, is sometimes fatal for unfortunate individuals caught in road accidents.
