DongguanToday 2021-06-16

22岁的东莞女孩王菁在本科毕业前夕,收到了哈佛大学、宾夕法尼亚大学等9家国际名校的硕士研究生offer。然而12年前,因为抽动症,她和父母无法想象她的人生还能这样走。

Wang Jing (Haley), a 22-year-old girl from Dongguan, who just graduated from Vanderbilt University in the United States this year, had received postgraduate offers from nine prestigious global universities, including Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, and Ivey Business School, which would have been impossible to even think of for her 12 years ago.

Once she dropped out of school, learning brought her back.

Wang Jing was very lively and filled with wonder about the world when she was a child. However, in 2009, she was diagnosed with Tourette syndrome (TS), and her world dimmed.

Tourette syndrome (TS), rarely known by people then, is a neurological immune system disease. The cause of TS was not known, and there was no specific remedy for it. Individuals with Tourette's have sudden, repetitive and involuntary body movements or vocalization involving different parts of the body. Examples would be rapid eye blinking, head jerking, or facial movements. Sometimes, they may shout out obscene words suddenly, hit people, or make a loud and strange sound. Therefore, Wang was received strange eyes from others and even suffered verbal violence. Even an affectionate greeting made the 10-year-old girl felt uncomfortable and stressed.

Wang's parents are middle school's English teachers.

In the fourth grade, she decided to drop out of school. After staying at home for a few months, her parents sent her to an international school whose courses are taught in English near home as a stopgap. In less than three months, thanks to her interest and efforts in learning English since childhood, although she put back to the second grade, she quickly caught up with her peers. Gradually, she had regained confidence in her studies.

During the time in the international school, Wang chose to "hide" her disease. She used coughing or rubbing her eyes to cover up her tic disorder. When she couldn't hold it, she would rush to the toilet and cry out, minimizing the interference with the class.

Went to the US alone at the age of 14

In August 2013, Wang went to a private high school in Pennsylvania alone. She was only 14 years old. Before starting school, she told her classmates about her TS disease and described the possible symptoms. At that time, she knew that as long as she accepted TS, it would gradually be a tiny part of her life and would hardly affect her.

During the three years of high school in the US, Wang took an active part in various extracurricular and volunteer activities. She also spent more than half a year interviewing 100 people from all walks of life, both Chinese and foreign. Finally, she published her first book, "Our Stories", telling 100 stories of these 100 people in Chinese and English.

When graduating from high school, Wang Jing was the only student who won the best student award in the school.

Not only that, but with her strong self-management ability and scientific schedule, she got an A in every subject. She got an SAT score of over 770 in the English reading test, whose total score is 800, exceeding 99% of the students in the United States.

Learning in 4 universities in 4 years

In her freshman year, taking advantage of Bryn Mawr College's resources and the Credit Transfer System, she took classes at the nearby Haverford College and the University of Pennsylvania. In order to catch up with the class, she bought a second-hand car and went back and forth to the three different schools every day to attend introductory level class in international relations, law, education, and urban planning.

She transferred to Vanderbilt University after her freshman year for a larger platform and more resources. Before that, she drove hundreds of miles to visit and compare the university. Unluckily, she encountered a tornado on the highway. At that time, the vision was terrible. She managed to drive to a gas station but found that the car wouldn't start. She calmly searched for a solution on her phone. After repairing the car by herself, she continued to drive back to school. It was early in the morning when she arrived.

Wang said that as her ability to solve problems improving, she has become more and more confident. She is very grateful for her family's confidence and strong backing so that she dares to try different things.

She participated in TS Awareness Walk

She was a radio anchor in a Children's Hospital

During her university years, Wang was always keen to participate in various social welfare activities and helped people in need. She once participated in a charity walk themed TS Awareness, and knew many people who also suffer from the same disease. In addition, she was also a radio anchor in a Children's Hospital and often organized various activities for those who were seriously ill. Wang said that she had received help from many people, and she hoped to use what she has learned to help more people in need, especially the TS children.

She submitted hundreds of resumes and interned in 5 companies.

During college, she sent out more than 100 resumes. After repeated rejections, she finally got an internship opportunity at a human resource consulting company in Chicago.

Wang Jing went to an Entrepreneur Center for an internship during the summer vacation, responsible for designing online classes and making videos.

In the summer of 2019, she went to a technology company in Chicago as a product operation intern. It was the first time she experienced the technology. It was all new to her. So she went online for information. Finally, she completed the two-month internship in one month. Later, she also participated in some other projects of the company, communicated and learned among various departments. She received her first salary at that time.

Went to France for half a year

At the end of her junior year, Wang decided to take a year off to travel and study in Europe. She took language courses while taught Chinese and English. She had studied and lived in France and Spain for a total of seven months and, at last, could communicate with local people proficiently with an upper-intermediate level of French and Spanish.

Wang believes that learning a language is not only for exams but also for a wider world. In the future, she will go to more countries to experience different cultures and use what she has learned to serve more people in need.
