Professor Petri Pellikka is member of the Finnish Academy of Sciences and professor of geoinformatics of the University of Helsinki. His research field is remote sensing and Earth observation of land use and land cover changes, with practical applications in arctic and boreal environments in Europe and Canada, as well as in mountainous areas of Europe and tropical Africa. During the last years the research interest has been focusing on the use of hyperspectral remote sensing and laser scanning data for forest, biomass and land cover studies and impacts of the land use changes to ecosystem services, namely in Africa.
Professor Pellikka got his MSc degree from University of Helsinki in 1990, carried out his PhD studies at University of Munich, Germany in 1992-1995, and post doc at Carleton University in Canada 1999-1999. He has been full professor at University of Helsinki since 2002. He has been a visiting scientist at Cambridge University (UK) in 2008 and a visiting professor in Lund University (Sweden), Beijing Normal University and Canterbury University (New Zealand) in 2017-2018. He has supervised more than 26 PhD theses, more than 60 MSc theses in remote sensing and is an author of more than 145 peer-reviewed articles with an H-index of 36. His research group Earth Change Observation Lab consists of 26 senior researchers, post docs and PhD students.
He has been a visiting professor at LIESMARS since 2019.

报告摘要

Global megatrends are many, e.g. urbanization, pandemics and climate change, but land cover change is often neglected as a megatrend. It can be easily mapped with remote sensing data in order to model further with remote sensing data its consequences to ecosystem services and climate.
Land cover change is the strongest in sub-Saharan Africa where population growth is high and demand for food security is severe. Conversion of woody vegetated areas to open land such as agricultural lands or urban areas, change the radiation and water balance of land surface, create heat islands and decrease carbon stocks, biodiversity and water resources.
Earth Change Observation Lab at the University of Helsinki, Finland is led by Professor Petri Pellikka, and he has carried out remote sensing of land cover in Africa since 2003. The key study area is Taita Taveta in Kenya, which can be used as a model of Africa as with the elevation from 500 m to 2200 m, also climate, land use, economical activity and livelihood vary.
In the presentation, Prof. Petri will present his entire research team consisting of three Chinese PhD students, and the impacts of land cover change to ecosystem services investigated wth remote sensing and environmental sensing. The ecosystem services are climate balancing, above ground carbon stocks on tree cover, water resources in the highlands and greenhouse gas emissions from soils under varying land cover.

测绘遥感信息工程国家重点实验室是我国测绘学科第一个国家级重点实验室。1989年初以武汉测绘科技大学国家重点学科摄影测量与遥感及大地测量专业的相关实验室为基础开始筹建，并在当年由国家计委正式批准成立；1991年世界银行贷款启动，成为世界银行在中国的七个跟踪示范实验室之一；1992年国家测绘局投入开放研究基金，实验室正式对外开放；1995年通过由国家教委、国家计委和国家测绘局组织的联合验收；2004年，在国家科技部等部委召开的国家重点实验室建设20周年总结表彰大会上，实验室被授予先进集体称号，获“金牛奖”。2000年、2005年、2010年、2015年，实验室在国家科技部开展的国家重点实验室评估中连续四次被评为“优秀”。
