In the 40 years of China’s reform and opening up, Hubei is opening its arms and mind to people from all corners of the world, attracting more and more foreigners to study and work here.

A series of reports focusing on Hubei's characteristics and development in the eyes of foreigners will be published. Let's take a closer knowledge of Shimada Koji.

“People in Wuhan are straightforward and enthusiastic, so I’d like to live with them. Wuhan is my second home, “ said 72-year-old Shimada Koji, a Japanese who has lived in Wuhan for nine years.

Shimada Koji hails from Fukuoka, Japan. He made friends with Chinese students living nearby, and was willing to do what it can to help them. In 2010, some Chinese students set out to start a curry restaurant in Wuhan, and he was invited to join them to teach cooking.

Finally, the old man chose to run his own restaurant called Dingwu (Chinese: 顶屋), near by the Central China Normal University. “I like to make contact with young people in Wuhan, which makes me feel energetic,” he said.

During the settlement of 9 years, Shimada Koji has been obsessed with the Yangtze River. He enjoys walking from the vicinity of the Yellow Crane Tower to the other side of the Yangtze River. "Standing on the riverside for a while, I will get put in a good mood," he said.

Shimada Koji is popular with others, and has many friends in Wuhan. They gather to exchange ideas and learn from others. "In Japan, I don't have any friends to eat together sometimes," he said, “Now I have a group of friends, it is very warm."

He also calls together many college students who have interest in Japanese. The old grandpa is willing to provide an exchange platform between Japanese and Chinese, from food to culture, attracting more and more diners by its fame. And he sticks to teaching Japanese with no charge.

Shimada Koji is fond of reading books on history, economics and sociology. Last year, he was fascinated by the history of Wuhan, and even wrote a relevant booklet. “Maybe I know much more about Wuhan’s history than you do," he said proudly.

He visits the Wuhan University to admire cherry blossom every spring. “The cherry blossom here looks like that in Fukuoka, and Wuhan brings me warmth and happiness as my hometown.” Shimada Koji said.
