Description:


The artificial language learning (ALL) methodology has been used to explore the cognitive underpinnings of linguistic universals, providing a robust method to test linguistic theories through the creation of artificial languages.

The ALL methodology has been used to explore linguistic research questions in phonology, syntax and acquisition, such as:

- phonetically-motivated learning biases explaining phonological patterns
- conceptually-motivated biases explaining syntactic patterns
- preferences for simplicity in language learning

Invited speakers from top language programmes in the United Kingdom and the United States will present their work and help students develop ideas of how to use this experimental approach in their research.

Students at the PhD level with a strong formal linguistics background who are looking to add experimental methodologies to their repertoire of methods are strongly encouraged to apply.
