Sex Toy Shop Closed After Opening Near 2 Chinese Kindergartens
By Ryan Gandolfo
A sex toy store recently closed down after opening up shop less than 100 meters away from two kindergartens in Xi’an. According to Kankan News, students passing by the shop on their way to and from school showed a heightened level of interest in the new store, home to two fully-stocked adult toy vending machines.
Teachers and parents quickly grew concerned about the X-rated toys, gels and goodies, and the effect exposure that such items would have on the neighborhood’s young minds. A bright neon sign was also visible for all passersby, teaching students the phrase ‘adult toys,’ something they probably won’t learn in school.
A parent of one of the students told Kankan news, “[My son] just asked me if those were beverages. I didn’t know how to respond, I just said they weren’t.” A teacher from one of the kindergartens also shared her concern over the influence the shop might have on her students, saying that kids nowadays are “very smart.”
Although the store had originally agreed on a six-month lease with the landlord, the 24-hour sex toy shop is no more, closing down less than a month after opening as a result of parent and teacher complaints.
Weibo netizens chimed in under a video post by People’s Daily, with many users coming to the shop’s defense. “What law states that adult toy shops can’t be within 100 meters of a kindergarten?” asked one Weibo user. “I feel sorry for that sex toy shop boss, just because [the parents] feel awkward, he has to shut down his business,” another person added.
