Dear Readers:
Over the past six months, COVID-19 has developed from a regional epidemic to a global public health crisis, magnifying a wide range of social issues. Other than the structural deficiency in disease containment, the scarcity and imbalanced distribution of medical resources, and the vulnerable social welfare systems, we also see a series of social issues with regard to identity and equality. Among them are regional discrimination and social stigmatization, nationalism and xenophobia, sexism and racism, to name a few. The pandemic has amplified these issues, but is certainly not the root cause of them. unCoVer, an initiative launched during the outbreak, will continue to uncover, document, and examine narratives, opinions, and perspectives on issues around social justice and intersectional identities. If you are interested in working with unCoVer to promote cross-cultural awareness, social equity and global solidarity, come and join us!

As a foreigner living and working in Shanghai...[t]he most rewarding part for me has been that myself and my friends/family in the US have gained so much knowledge and perspective about what is happening in China during this time. I have been a beneficiary of this project, probably much more so than a contributor.

As a budding writer and aspiring social activist and journalist, I feel compelled to expose complex issues that unfold in and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic . . . [I hope] to unveil hidden narratives, bridge communities, and ultimately, bring social justice.

[A]t the beginning of February . . . [when] people checked the drastically rising number of cases every day and were anxious about daily life and work. It was also a time when Asian people started to be seriously discriminated against in many Western countries. [unCoVer] was a brave and practical way in which we could actually record different voices from people in Hubei province and help others to better understand the situation there.

The past months are like a mirror, reflecting problems and thoughts that had long existed in society. Growing up with this newborn platform, I share the same feelings with many readers that we are also rediscovering ourselves and the relations we have with the world.
