A woman wearing an old style clothes stood at the window of a shop.She thought for a moment,for she did not know whether she should come in and finally she went in.She asked to see a good dress in the window.The assistant was cleaning his front desk,he raised his head and took a quick look at the woman.He didn’t like the way she was dressed at all.Then he spoke slowly,“This dress has been sold.”Hearing that,the woman walked out of the shop angrily.She decided to punish the assistant the next day.

The next day she came to the shop again.This time she was dressed in a magnificent coat with a handbag in her hand.She found out the rude assistant and asked for the same dress.The assistant didn’t recognize her.He followed her instruction happily.After he got the dress with great difficulty,the woman said she didn’t like it.Then she asked for another dress,pretended to look at it for a while and said she disliked it again.In this way,she enjoyed making him bring her almost everything in the window.Finally she bought the dress she had first asked for and left the shop with satisfaction,leaving the tired assistant and a pile of dresses.

W:Don’t forget,Peter,tomorrow is Mother’s Day.

M:Oh,my goodness.I almost forgot.Thanks for reminding me,Alice.I must go and get her a present,then.

W:Yes,you should,otherwise,Mother will be sad that her only son has forgotten her day.

M:That’s a real problem.I’ve no idea what she likes.What are you going to give her?

W:A dozen of roses,as usual.Why not get something to wear?A hat,or a handbag...anything except shoes.

M:In fact that’s a big farm.I saw sheep and cattle.

W:Are there wild animals?

M:Maybe.But I didn’t see any.

W:Did you collect some specimens?

M:Certainly.I learned about more than thirty flowers.

W:Great!How long did you stay there?

M:A week.

W:I’m sorry I didn’t go.

M：You took an English class from Professor Sanford,didn’t you?

W:I sure did.

M:Well,I’ve heard lots about it and I’m thinking about her Basics in English class next term.

W:Don’t do it.

M:What do you mean?You didn’t like the class?

W:The class was interesting enough,but Professor Sanford is one of the most difficult teachers I have ever had.She expects a great deal from her students,so if you plan to take the course,be prepared to work very hard.

M:What about the woman herself?Is she reasonable?

W:Yes,she most definitely loves her students and is very understanding of our problems.She was always willing to listen to what we had to say.I really liked her.I just hated all the reading we had to do in classical literature.

M:Well.I happen to like classical literature.

W:Then,you’ll love the class.I was more interested in theory.

Last summer I visited Mexico City to see the ancient art in the museum there.I was surprised at how well I managed to get around even though I didn’t speak a word of Spanish.

The manager of my hotel gave me a map of the city and told me that the best way to get to the museum was by subway.I didn’t know where the nearest subway was,but I was sure I would find it if I walked a little.After an hour,I was still walking.I was completely lost.Most people would give up in that situation,but not me.After I thought it over,I knew exactly what to do.I went upstairs and took a taxi.
