Hannes Pfau, Partner of UNStudio and Director of UNStudio Asia, recently shared with China Economic Information about UNStudio's visions, the development of UNStudio Asia and how local cultures well integrate with contemporary designs.

As a managementof an international architecture studio, Hannes leads the design teams and projects in Asia to well inherit and demonstrate the core values and design visions of UNStudio, founded by Ben van Berkel, and to future proof the development of urban planning and architecture.

UNStudio envisions a harmony between nature and a new type of city which connects city with agriculture for building sustainable urban infrastructure. This idea has been widely discussed in the industry. UNStudio integrates local cultures and contemporary ideas into the architectural designand planning. “From our perspective, people’s demands and needs are the same. Although our studio was founded in Europe, we understand the cultures and people in China and Asia especially with our local talents. We think the cultures between the West and China are indeed compactable.

“比如我们在设计上海189弄购物中心时，这是一个住宅区域里的商业建筑，我们把上海独有的弄堂文化融进了这个商业购物中心的设计中。我们在设计时更多的考虑中国文化和中国消费者的购物需求等因素，就是说我们把上海弄堂文化融合进一个现代的、而且是超前的购物中心，这就是现代与传统很好的融合。

“For example, when we designed for Lane 189, which is a commercial architecture in a residential community, we decided to bring together the Chinese culture and the Chinese consumer behaviors. We incorporated Shanghai’s alley culture well into the forward-thinking shopping mall design, demonstrating a good example of modern and tradition integration.
The project not only inherites the traditional culture but also provides a brand new shopping experience to consumers. You can feel the old Shanghai flair in the contemporary environment, comfortably spending your time there. When designing a project in China, we combine local culture with the West in order to pass on the precious traditions through our architecture.

三十年的发展历程，UNStudio与业主方携手走向新型的、可持续发展的道路，并从三个方面印证了可持续发展的不可替代：有利于恢复生态环境；有更好的经济利益；有助于人类的生活与生存。对此，Hannes认为建造完美的城市空间是理想，也是现实的需求。“作为建筑设计事务所，我们提供最适当的设计方案，使其完美地融合于整个城市，同时为项目打造未来的价值。”
With 30 years’ experience, UNStudio works hand in hand with the clients to realize sustainable developments, which are proofed to recover the eco-system, bring higher economic benefits and create better living environment for people. Hannes thinks it is not only a vision but also a demand from the reality to create perfect urban spaces. “As an architectural company, we need to provide the best design solutions, which will adapt to the city contexts and create value for the future.”

“Our step to China market was not driven by the economic factors; instead, we hope to contribute our talents as designers to the rapid development of urbanizationin China. This year is the 10th year of UNStudio Asia being established. Throughout the years, UNStudio Asia has worked, and is still working on a number of architectural design and planning projects in China, such as the completed Raffles City Hangzhou, Lane 189 in Shanghai, Keppel Cove Marina & Clubhouse in Zhongshan and Qingdao World Horticultural Expo 2014 Theme Pavilion, as well as the under-progress project Lyric Theatre Complex in Hong Kong. Among all our projects, we put our emphasis on the idea of ‘sustainable future city development,’ explained Hannes.

“我们公司注重的是设计质量，而不是设计数量。创造性地解决问题是我们公司的核心内容之一。我们认为研究客户的直接要求，并到下一步的设计内容是设计师的责任。”
“We concerns about design quality, not quantity. How to solve problems innovatively is one of our core values. We believe it is our responsibility to study client’s brief and also think about what’s more can be done next.”

Hannes指出：“现在城市的发展更加智能化，用先进的技术手段实现了城市智能化，这是城市变更的一种方式。目前我们现在面对的环境恶化不仅是空气污染，其实噪声污染也是非常严重的，这是新的城市污染源。从我们建筑师来说，我们会研发一些能使环境向好的建筑设计手法，我们新近成立了一个建筑科技公司UNSense，致力探索和发展科技将环境人性化，通过技术创新改善全球建筑和城市中的人民的生活质量。”
“Cities become smarter. With the use of advance technology to realise smart city is an approach to renew our cities. The environment is getting worse, not only air pollution but also noise pollution which is a new source of urban pollution. As architects, we research and develop architectural design approaches which are environmental-friendly. UNStudio recently has established an arch-tech company called UNSense, which aims to explore and develop technology to humanize the environment, improving our architecture aswell as people’s living quality in cities.”
