“UNStudio’s proposal for the Shenzhen Opera House presents a fully integrated urban gesture. Not only does it provide multiple spaces for indoor performances, but it brings the theatre of the opera to an urban level. By dispersing various functions across the site, we created a fluid landscape of public performance.” Ben van Berkel, Founder and Principal Architect, UNStudio.

UNStudio was shortlisted to participate in the international competition for the Shenzhen Opera House in February 2020. The project is located at the top of Shenzhen Bay Park at the south end of Shekou Bay highway Bridge. The design scope was 17.5 hectares, with a building height of 57.8 meters.

“Our team’s vision for the Shenzhen Opera House is rooted on the idea of “publicness”. We believed it is the quality or state of being public or being owned by the public that brings spaces, sites, and individuals together to create culture.” – said Hannes Pfau, Partner of UNStudio.

As a new icon for future Shenzhen and a landmark in the Greater Bay Area, Shenzhen Opera House  aims to become a world-class art facility, a new international platform for cultural exchanges, and a quality coastal art parlour for citizens.

The Opera House will be the core building along a coastal cultural belt, creating a new vibrant area for community and parkland. The goal is to shape a seaside landscape-featuring mountain and sea views, to generate dynamic public and cultural activities, and make the area a vibrant bay area of international repute.

Vision

Being the most important cultural project among the “Ten Major Cultural Facilities in the New Era” planned by the local authorities, the site of the Shenzhen Opera House occupies a unique position along the costal line of the Shenzhen Bay.

We believe that a great site with an ambitious brief needs to be connected to the people with a grand idea. Our strategy for the site centers on creating a variety of unique and varied public spaces where people are invited to engage, interact, and experience the site and grow Shenzhen’s culture in unique and exciting ways.

By blending the unique coastal environment, the green necklace and the public experience into a world-class venue for the Arts, the Shenzhen Opera is trying to bring nature and culture into people’s daily lives.

We have strategically placed public and semi-public areas of different character and purpose across key levels and zones of the project. In this way we guarantee that the entirety of the site is activated throughout the day and that the public can have a variety of unique experiences across the site.

Journeys

Opera is well known as a cultural performance to tell stories. Likewise, the social spaces of foyers and plazas bring people together, promote social activity, and connect journeys and stories. There are five main user groups we designed specific journeys for: families, theatre visitors, performers and BOH staff, outdoor recreation users, and commercial users.

Performance is deeply rooted in culture and goes beyond high-end cultural scenarios. Our proposal celebrates performances at all levels. Pantomime, street singers, dancers and all type of performing artists find a place in our design.

Meanwhile, a very important aspect of our proposal lies in its commercial logic.  Well aware of the need for this typology to activate the rest of the programme, we have carefully placed commercial journeys that include cafes, dining and shopping experiences in between the theatres and along the Art Street. Each commercial zone capitalizes on different qualities, allowing for a variety of commercial uses, from small dining and pop-up shops to waterfront destination dining experiences.

Identity

From the water level, the building enters into a dialogue with the natural elements of the site - the water and mountains. The building seeks to harmonize with these elements by drawing from the strong lines of the mountain ridge and the flowing water of the bay.

As you move around the building, it provides a continuously animated skyline. The building roof rises and falls like the peaks of the mountains and waves. Every angle is specially designed to give a unique identity to the buildings on the site and to showcase each theatre individually, yet connected as an ensemble.

The skyline combined with the natural beauty of the site provides a unique branding identity. Whether through visual media or in commercial branding, the building’s relationship to the mountains and the sea becomes the defining feature of the Shenzhen Opera House.
