Duties and Responsibilities:
The selected candidate will report to the EAP SEAE1 Practice Manager based in Singapore and work under the oversight of the Country ENB Coordinator based in Beijing.
The Environmental Engineer’s role will be to oversee and support compliance with the WBG’s safeguards policies and ESF, ensuring that environmental sustainability is integrated into project design and implementation!
• As a key member of the World Bank team, lead and/or support the development and implementation of pollution management operations, technical assistance oranalytical task related to integrated pollution management (including air, soil and chemical pollution), solid waste (including marine plastics), and others as needed.
• Lead and/or participate in policy dialogue, responding to clients’ priority needs for lending, analytical support, and advisory services in relation to pollution and environmental management, and climate change.
• Support the development of business opportunities and priority programs inChina, to help better manage pollution and reduce health impacts for national economic development.
• Work closely with colleagues in other Bank Global Practices working in China.
• Support and expand building relationships and facilitate effective communication with other development partners, NGOs, the private sector, andother collaborators.
• Offer knowledge exchange, dissemination and awareness raising activities with key clients; provide technical training and capacity building related to environmental and pollution management.
• Participate as a team member in various projects, including participating in identification missions; seeking and developing opportunities to integrate sound environmental management and policies into various investment project operations. In addition, maintaining regular dialog with the client and enhancing their capacity for understanding of and compliance with environmental policies; and contributing to mission outputs and reports.
• Other assignments as and when required.
Selection Criteria
• Advanced degree (PhD orMasters) in environmental engineering, environmental science, or related fields.
• A minimum of five years of full-time relevant professional experience in the pollution management sector, including in topics such as air pollution,chemical pollution, water pollution, solid waste management, ozone-depleting substances, or similar.
• Demonstrated ability to undertake analytical work, review environmentalsector policies, and prepare policy-relevant papers, documents and presentation materials.
• Experience in managing the implementation of projects or tasks, and a track record demonstrating ability to apply analytical results into on-the-ground activities.
• Working knowledge of the Chinese institutional and political context related to environmental and pollution management, and exposure to the national environmental policy challenges.
• Understanding of climate change issues.
• Collaborative, experienced in working in a broad range of cultural contexts, with multi-disciplinary teams, and with the ability to work independently withlimited supervision.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Willingness to travel extensively in China and Mongolia and possibly to other countries is necessary, including to remote rural areas.
• Familiarity with WBG’s operational policies will be advantageous.
• Advanced language skills in Chinese and in English (writing, speaking,listening and reading).
