Lesley
Helen Street
-- Rebecca W.

PL Day Overview by Lesley Meyer
I consider myself fortunate to be Director of Education for Dehong and on Monday I was privileged to be able to lead a wonderful day of professional learning in Dehong Shanghai. Teachers are role models and just as we hope that we can instill a love of learning in our students, we too must be ‘life-long learners’, continuing our own education and improving our teaching skills.
The focus for our professional learning day was ‘wellbeing’ and our theme was, ‘Every child known and every child heard!’ The middle school staff and elementary school‘Benzhuren’ examined a wide range of academic research into the challenges facing students in a fast-changing, highly competitive world-a world which for some children has become a stressful place.
Ensuring that each child in our care is understood, valued and listened to is not always easy and working together the teachers looked at the four areas that make up a social context in school: people, policies and practices, social norms and physical spaces. Using the work of Dr. Helen Street, a highly respected expert in the field of positive education and wellbeing, we were able to put together some powerful plans to support our students as they grew and flourish in Dehong.
Dr. Helen Street:
"It has often been said that it takes a whole village to raise a child. I certainly believe that it takes a whole healthy school context to help a child to flourish. With passion, careful planning and perseverance, great things develop".
