Trapped in a mine
困在矿井里

First listen and then answer the question.

Why is the rescue taking so long?

Six men have been trapped in a mine for seventeen hours.
6个人被困在矿井里已有17个小时了。

If they are not brought to the surface soon they may lose their lives.
如果不把他们尽快救到地面上来，他们就有可能丧生。

However, rescue operations are proving difficult.
然而，事实证明营救工作非常困难。

If explosives are used, vibrations will cause the roof of the mine to collapse.
如果用炸药爆破，震动会引起矿顶塌落。

Rescue workers are therefore drilling a hole on the north side of the mine.
因此，营救人员在矿井的北侧钻了一个洞。

They intend to bring the men up in a special capsule.
他们准备用一种特制的容器把这6个人救上来。

If there had not been a hard layer of rock beneath the soil,
如果不是因为土壤下面有一层坚硬的岩石，

they would have completed the job in a few hours.

As it is, they have been drilling for sixteen hours and they still have a long way to go.

Meanwhile, a microphone, which was lowered into the mine two hours ago, has enabled the men to keep in touch with their closest relatives.

Though they are running out of food and drink,
虽然他们的食物和饮料都快消耗尽了，

the men are cheerful and confident that they will get out soon.

They have been told that rescue operations are progressing smoothly.

If they knew how difficult it was to drill through the hard rock, they would lose heart.

EX. 虚拟语气翻译翻译：

1. If he should come here tomorrow, I would talk to him.

如果他明天来这儿的话，我就跟他谈谈。

2. 如果下周日下大雪，我们就不能去滑冰了。

If there were a heavy snow next Sunday, we would not go skating.

3. 如果她下周一来这儿的话，我就会告诉她这件事的始末。

If she were to be here next Monday, I would tell her about the matter.

ü if从句虚拟语气总复习

EX. 虚拟语气翻译填空：

1.如果我是你，我一定会努力学习而不是整天打游戏。

If I were you, I would work hard instead of playing computer games all day long.

2.要是小时候他用功学习的话，他现在也不用当乞丐了。

If he had studied hard as a boy, he wouldn’t have been a beggar..

3.如果我现在处于你的位置，我会采取不同的做法。

If I were in your position, I would act differently.

4.如果当时我处在你的位置上，我会采取不同的做法的。

If I had been in your position, I would have acted differently.

5.假如你能使他改变主意，你会使他免了很多麻烦。

If you could make him change mind, you would save him a lot of trouble

6. 如果明天下雨，我们就取消野营。

If it were to rain tomorrow, we would cancel the camping.

ü 错综虚拟

虚拟条件句中，结果主句和条件从句的谓语动作若不是同时发生时，虚拟语气的形式应作相应的调整。这种条件句叫错综条件句。

e.g． 如果我在学校学习刻苦的话，我现在也会成为一个工程师了。

If I had worked hard at school, I would be an engineer, too.
