Green Light-Year Bi-annual Report 2018-2019

光年君 绿色光年 2023-07-03

We are looking forward to making Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) a core part of formal and informal education!

Green Light-Year Bi-annual Report 2018-2019 (Chinese version) was released this Summer. Let’s take a look at what we’ve done in the last two years.

1

Who are we?

We are an environmental NGO officially registered with Shanghai Minhang District Civil Affairs Bureau in March 2016. Our initial mission was to carry out environmental public education to communities, schools and enterprises by implementing a series of experiential and interactive activities, and promoting green lifestyle and sustainable consumption, so that people can "see, touch, experience and spread" environmental concepts towards a low-carbon lifestyle.

After more than three years of development, Green Light-Year is transforming itself into a professional Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) organization in China.

Within these 17 goals, we focus on cultivating eight core qualities for young people to meet challenges in the 21st century:

2

What have we done?

//① Community Projects

Waste Food Party: carry out ugly food and waste food party activities in enterprises and public spaces that can provide safe and hygienic food production facilities to attract the public attention to food waste and sustainable lifestyle.

Developing Science Courses in Collaboration with university student associations: a series of popular science courses for primary and secondary school students, which focused on "magic clean energy source" and green DIY (Upcycling) courses by collaborating with university students’ science societies in Shanghai.

"Going to the Market" Multi-disciplinary Social Learning PBL: a six-day shopping-in-the-market activity in the form of interdisciplinary social learning PBL combining economics, sociology, environmental sciences and public administration.

Community Birdwatching: Every Saturday morning, to lead residents in local communities to spend 1.5 hours to watch birds, visiting community residential areas, nearby university campuses and a park for birdwatching activities.

//② School PBL Research Projects

This project predominately cooperates with primary and secondary schools, we hope that the implementation of such projects can cultivate more young people to focus on practical problems and respond to social problems with experience, and cultivate their public awareness and social responsibility!

For example:

"Penglai Town" Research Academy: the environmental protection initiative put forward by students was reported on the Headline story on the front page of Xinmin Evening News, by Penglai Road 2nd Primary School in Huangpu District, Shanghai.

Our research project has won many national and Shanghai municipal and district level youth research awards, including:

//③ Corporate Projects

Science Curriculum in Celanese: We have been entrusted by Celanese to develop three science courses involving chemistry and environmental protection and children’s safety training. We were also invited to organize an upcycling workshop for Celanese Asia Annual Meeting in 2019.

JD Logistics "Classified Consciousness Factory" Project: JD Logistics and Green Light-Year jointly launched a recycling plan from October to December 2019, which implements interesting workshops in schools and in communities.

TOT BIOPHARM "Model United Nations" Project: Green Light-Year has customized a simulated United Nations Sustainable Enterprise Conference for TOT BIOPHARM in 2019.

//④ Research Tours

"Retrace Xuesen Road" Northwest Science and Technology Environmental Protection Summer Camp

"Targetted Poverty Alleviation and Sustainable Development" Field Research Camp of Bulang Village in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan

Nordic International Youth Environmental Protection Research Camp in Sweden and in Finland in August 2018

Summer Camp for International Understanding and Sustainable Development, in collaboration with Adream Foundation and Stiftung Mercator Foundation, targeting junior high school students from township schools in central and western China, summer of 2019.

HSBC "Future Star" Winter Camp for Sustainable Development serving 120 University Students from 20 top universities in Jan 2019. Implemented in Yangtze Delta and Pearl River Delta areas.

The China Eco-Apprenticeship Programme(CEAP)designed and launched in July 2019. Two participants were invited to join 1st UN Youth Climate Summit in New York City in September 2019.

3

Why do we do this?

China's 19th National Congress has put forward higher requirements for green development. In order to achieve a well-off society in an equal manner by 2020, the construction of an ecological civilization should be implemented in every household for an extended period of time. It needs not only top-down government support, but also extended support for sustainable development projects for young people in the education system.

Our mission was to promote sustainable lifestyles for communities, schools and enterprises. However, we met young people of all ages, and gradually found that our activities or projects have brought positive effects to many young people. From families to the communities, from the city to the countryside, we should enable everyone to participate in low-carbon and environmental protection lifestyles, and let everyone integrate green development into their lives.
