The Yorkshire Sculpture Park invited Luciano to landscape these gardens as part of a major exhibition of work by the American sculptor, Ursula von Rydinsgvard, for the 56th International Art Exhibition - The Venice Biennale. Inspired by the tree trunks twisted by the wind and the shadows they cast, Luciano wanted to create a calm, contemplative space where Ursula’s work could be appreciated, and which would act as a welcome contrast to many of the more frenetic activities of the Biennale.
Luciano's approach focused on how to create maximum impact with minimum intervention, and his design consists of six circular gravel areas for the sculptures, linked by a simple gravel serpentine path. Green lawn islands allow uninterrupted views across the space and out over the sea towards San Giorgio Maggiore.

This project allowed Luciano to explore the integration of architecture, interior and garden in a major way for the first time – themes that he has consistently returned to in every subsequent project.

Originally an awkward and angular site, the garden was carefully carved into a series of different entertaining and green spaces. A generous terrace with full-width Portland Stone steps was created. Lines of trees allow for privacy while still making the space feel open. Yew cubes running the length of the garden provide the signature interplay of light and shade. The front garden was also designed by Luciano as a prelude to the composition in the back.

One of the smallest gardens Luciano has created is also a very significant project. It is a garden that paved the way for future collaboration with artists and provided a symbolic link between his studies and his life as a successful garden designer.

This time, Luciano was keen to ensure it retained the feeling of intimacy that he'd achieved at Pelham Crescent while still feeling spacious and generous.

Colonnades of table-pruned trees and clipped hedging gives rhythm and movement to the space. On a practical level, they also create different spaces within the garden, from entertaining to play.

The perceived simplicity of this garden should not distract from how the space was unified and sculpted. Several existing features needed to remain including a large Hawthorn, two Limes and a Chestnut.

Tiers of tightly clipped hedge planting - Yew, Box and Portuguese Laurel – create a frame for the garden and for a spectacular phosphor bronze sculptor by Nigel Hall. Below lies a water feature by Andrew Ewing – a reflective surface of shallow water over darker stone, mirroring the sculpture hovering above.

The first of Luciano’s RHS Chelsea show gardens was a signature execution of his design approach. Classical Italian design, controlled composition and understated elegance were all key elements and came together to win Gold.

The garden featured immaculately clipped layered hedging, sublime travertine marble, brimming water by Andrew Ewing, and a sculpture by Nigel Hall. Rich blood reds and luscious plum tones were the key colours of the herbaceous planting, with opulent peonies and the ethereal foliage of bronze fennel taking centre stage.

Collaborating with the architect Kengo Kuma and sculptor Peter Randall-Page, he forged an artistic exchange that explored man’s relationship with the natural world.
While Kuma’s Wind Pavilion used bamboo to capture temporary moments of light and movement, Randall-Page explored the tension between order and chaos in his iconic sculptures. Meanwhile, Luciano’s intimate arrangement of space and his delicate and naturalistic approach to water combined with dreamy, billowing planting to deliver his second Gold medal.

A three-year hiatus from Chelsea, and in that time, Luciano had spent much time at Great Dixter, the great Arts and Crafts garden, where he worked as an apprentice of the charismatic head gardener, Fergus Garrett. The influence of that time is abundantly clear in the naturalistic planting of yellows, creams, blues and greens. The planting contrasts with the strongly geometric layout to create a cool contemplative space, which continually explores his interest in layers and the play of light.

His ongoing desire to collaborate with other artists saw a partnership with Ursula von Rydingsvard, whose monumental cedar sculptures lent a mysterious, organic and textural rawness to the garden.

The essence of this garden derives from the manner in which it synthesises the indigenous, the traditional and the contemporary with an immersive understanding of the historical, architectural and landscape context of the Val d'Orcia.

The design is conceived as a sequence of rooms, each with its own specific atmosphere and sense of place. Moving within and between the different spaces of the garden offers encounters not only with a variety of planting, but also with contrasting expressions of perspective, proportion, volume, rhythm, junction and threshold.

Set within the grand surrounds of the Wentworth Estate, under Luciano’s eye this garden became an exploration of carefully considered levels and aesthetic simplicity, while fulfilling the client’s needs for a variety of entertaining and dining spaces.

Beyond the terrace, which is constructed in a scale so as to connect the large, wide house to the landscape, a sequence of spaces open up views and connections to the mature woodland beyond. There, the formality of the garden gives way to a looser, wilder quality but the two remain intrinsically connected by the repetition of topiary and hedging.
