Gloriette Guesthouse by noa * builds on the tradition of summer holidays at Ritten and adds another link to the chain. On the Bozner’s favourite mountain, a house was created, in which city and country merge together.
The former small hotel business Bergfink, which was an anchor point in the village structure and nestled amidst the rural-urban structure with all its bourgeois domiciles, built by wealthy Bolzano merchants around the turn of the century, was demolished and a new jewel was created in its place. As the name suggests, it is a gem in the landscape, inspired by the architectural typology in timelessly, elegant Art Nouveau. With the feeling of an era in which, - not at all pompous - the architecture of the city in a simplified form and without giving up completely on luxury and comfort on the Ritten transposed - generous, classic, simple, but not sober.

THE ARCH AS A LEITMOTIF
It was essential for noa* to incorporate locally prevalent elements, such as the arches in the façade, or the hipped roof, which looks back to a long tradition in the village of Oberbozen. At the same time, the rhombus is included; a decorative element that appears amongst the many railroad-houses along the Ritten railway, which connects the different summer holiday destinations. The holistic design approach is clearly visible: numerous details form a common thread running through the entire project.
What begins on the ground floor as a flat double arch at the façade, develops through a significant leap in dimensions, into a concise uniaxial arched façade in the floors above. This allows the quality of the outer spaces to become more visible . It is especially in this area behind the arcades, where inner and outer space merge – the loggias function as connecting elements. On the very top, clearly detached and with its hipped roof almost appearing as a building on its own, sits the wellness area. Here again, unmistakably, the element of the arch, which, as a bronze- coloured shell breaks through the roof structure and – positioned asymmetrically – sets a confident statement for a particularly lively architectural language.
Certainly the biggest highlight, already visible from far off, is the spa area, with its extravagant cantilevered pool. A unique eye catcher, is the sweeping cylinder, which on the south side of the building drills its ways into the hipped roof and protrudes on the other side of the facade an upside down arch, serving as the exceptional pool.
Pool
The shell, in which the pool is enclosed, is covered with the same bronze-coloured aluminium panels as the outside of the cubic bay windows. It forms a caesura to the dark brown hipped roof and allows for a fascinating play of reflections.
Nearly six meters deep, the curvature, the transparency and the gentle reflection create some sort of sculpture that reaches into the interior. When entering from the rear end, the pool is covered with a bronze-coloured rounded shell, which increasingly dissolves into a rounded net structure of poles, until one swims out under the open sky: an interplay between metal and water that creates a transition into boundless freedom. It is a process of soft fading out that dissolves this cylindrical shell and thus triggers the feeling of floating while enjoying the distant view.

The timelessness of the Art Nouveau buildings at Ritten entail, is captured in the interior and carried out in an abstract manner. At the same time a kind of clear, contrasting and consistent framing of elements forms a recurring detail, which can be traced throughout the entire building. Also the theme of the arch finds its continuation in the interior. The furniture is mostly freestanding and loosely positioned, elegant and plain upholstery enhance the ambience.
Rooms
In the public area, a seamless resin floor was chosen as an element to allow the room to flow continuously. “Islands” with wooden flooring were created within the floor, that define the different areas of the lounge and restaurant. Spaces are defined with room-in-room shells, where wall, floor and ceiling are furnished with the same material. The appealing and inviting atmosphere is also achieved through the use of wood, which never appears rustic but noble, homogenously plain, without being cold.

The Hotel Seehof is located on a high plateau near the village of Natz- Schabs/Naz-Sciaves near Brixen/Bressanone (IT) by the small natural lake “Flötscher Weiher”.
In 2017 this family-run hotel underwent major renovation and extensions, with an entire restyling. 16 new suites, the new pool and wellness area, directly on the lake correspond with the new design and management concept: to place nature and the recreational value as the point of focus.
The location in the middle of the mountains gives the hotel an alpine character with a Mediterranean flair. The main building is reminiscent of a stately residence in the countryside; Deep loggias, as open spaces, visually enlarge the suites and thus intensify the special connection with nature. The new rough, earth-colored plaster combined with the new clear, horizontal wooden structure gives the hotel a noble appearance.
Stefan Rier
"The wooden façade and its rough surface are related to the environment, with a focus on incorporating regional materials. The communication with the lake - important characteristic and name of the hotel - is deliberately staged here." —— Stefan Rier

The new spa area with pool and sauna area connect structurally with the surrounding landscape and impressively opens up with its irregular potholes and pergolas through large panorama windows towards the lake. Directed views from the interior into the surrounding grounds, as well as inside open areas, so- called patios, concisely convey the feeling of being in a large park.

The design of the outdoor areas also play an important role. A natural unity was created here, in which the space can be walked through on different paths. Contemplative dwellings are spread around the lakeshore.
The combination of the architecture with the surroundings is most impressive here: the oblique, green roofs of the spa can be used for sunbathing, while this green area seamlessly transitions into the surrounding forests and fruit orchards. Architecture becomes landscape and landscape architecture.

By creating an unified, rhythmically alternating façade with native larch tree trunks noa* connects "old and new" in a consistent manner. The homogeneous appearance, following the natural topography of the area, creates the theatrical base for the design of the new, cantilevering pool, which thrones between the old and new accommodation wings, floating between heaven and earth...
The key challange in the project was to create a link between the exisiting building and the new design, in order to keep a uniformal and consistent appearance. The debarked larch trunks, which were used as multifunctional façade elements for the existing and new building, succeed in creating this aesthetical connection. The multifunctional façade elements of debarked larch trunks create an optical link between existing and new, maintaining the homogeneous appearance of the project.

The design of the newly constructed part of the buildung is orientated typologically on the already existing curved accommodation wing. Further the fluid shape of the new design, which becomes especially evident in plan view, follows the topography of the existing landscape with its slope and steep contour lines.
The tree trunks, as narrow double wooden pillars, strive to function as an unifying envelop for the project by creating a continuous aesthetics.
Thew new perforated, powder-coated metal balustrades replace the old wooden ones and are fixed in a fluit curvy manner. With their earthy tones and perforation, they allow access to the view while at the same time enhancing the feeling of privacy. This colour scheme was used for the whole façade, creating a homogeneous building envelop. Through the use of a warm, gray brown earth tone, derived from the colour palette of the surrounding landscape, a uniformal design was achieved.

The façade design with debarked tree trunks also continues on the new entrance area, which with its design as a rotunda allows a maximum of natural light to flow into the building. Topographic curves can be seen as the key influence for the design process and are not only evident on the outside but also on the inside of the building. This allows the gap between inside and outside, cold and warm, before and after, to almost disappear...

The new pool, which imposingly rests in-between the two accommodation wings, seems like a floating rock, come to rest at the site, overlooking the valley. The hidden edges of the pool, kept in anthracite-coloured stone, abolish the gap between pool and landscape, creating the impression of the water flowing into nothing, disappearing between pool and landscape.

The pool metaphorically reminds of a mountain lake, nestled into the astonishing mountainscape of the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Dolomites...
Pool
The highlight of the project is the new sky pool, floating like a natural rock over the new accommodation wing. Without any visible boarders, a width of 5 m, a length of 25 m and a depth of 1,30 m the over 17 m cantilevering pool can be seen as completely unique. The position of the pool, which floats 12 m above the ground, at its extreme edge, gives the swimmer the feeling of floating – weightlessly between heaven and earth. This impression is further reinforces by the glass front and a glazed window on the bottom of the pool.
In the existing garden at basement level, the new scarped circular relaxation room, is fitting neatlessly into the existing exterior garden area. Also in this part of the project the design follows the language of the accommodation wing and entrance area. The roof of the relaxation room is fully glazed and covered radially with wooden beams. A loose distribution of the beams allows for excellent views through the glass roof.
Spa & Fitness
The new rooms in the annex with their glazed front and east facing-balcony allow for natural lighting. Contemporary interpreted stoves in the rooms create a living room atmosphere, while debarked wooden room dividers create a link to the exterior and its façade. Lastly also the curves of the balcony follow the main theme of the fluid gesture, and celebrate the project as one, which through the conversion and new construction stands in a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.
