塔 "作为一种建筑形制起源于印度,最早被称为“窣堵坡”。在梵文中被称为Stupa,巴利文称Thnpo,其原意为“积聚”,即积土石而成,或谓佛的福德积聚于此,有坟冢之意。中国古代佛塔的建造最早与佛教仪式有关。在逐渐发展的过程中,中国将楼阁的建筑特点应用于佛塔的建造,创造了各种风格的塔,实现了宗教礼仪概念与中国本土文化属性的相结合。


The “pagoda”, first known as “stupa”, is an architectural form originated in India. It is called स्तूप(stūpa)in Sanskrit and Thūpa in Pali, meaning “accumulation”. That is, a mound of earth and stones. Pagoda is also believed to have the function of gathering merits of the Buddha, serving as a burial mound. The construction of ancient Chinese pagodas was originally associated with Buddhist rituals. As it evolves, Chinese people has gradually incorporated the architectural features of pavilions and towers into the pagoda construction, which creates various styles of pagodas combining the concept of religious rituals with indigenous Chinese cultural attributes.


艺术家杨淏从2019年开始在中国进行古建筑的田野考古与研究,以梁思成的《中国建筑史》作为出发点进行调研,在考证的过程中逐渐开始把目光集中在中国古塔方面。一方面,因为“塔”是中国古代建筑形制中最为特殊的一类,并且更多的和宗教礼仪联系紧密;另一方面是杨淏发现很多西方语境以及西方历史文献里对中国“古塔”的认识与研究颇为有趣,例如Alois Riegl的著作“Historical Grammar of the Visual Arts”以及William Chambers的《东方园林论》(A Dissertation on Oriental Gardening)中都有对中国古塔进行研究,它曾经是西方人眼中“纪念碑”一般的建筑象征;从19世纪开始,大量的西方摄影师来到中国,古塔也成为他们最痴迷的拍摄与研究对象,最为著名的有Felice Beato和John Thomson。早期西方对中国古塔的迷恋也反映到西方一些园林建筑设计,比如伦敦Kew Garden里的宝塔。


Since 2019, Hao Yang has been conducting field archaeology and research on ancient Chinese architecture in China. His research started from Liang Sicheng's book: A History of Chinese Architecture and then gradually narrowed down to the ancient Chinese pagodas. One reason is because “pagoda” is one of the most distinctive types of ancient Chinese architecture, which is closely associated with religious rituals. On the other hand, Yang found the understanding and research of ancient Chinese pagodas in Western contexts and Western historical literature is quite interesting. Works such as Alois Riegl's Historical Grammar of the Visual Arts and William Chambers's A Dissertation on Oriental Gardening both explored ancient Chinese pagodas. In the western context, pagodas were considered as architectural symbols akin to "monuments." From the nineteenth century onwards, numerous Western photographers came to China. Pagodas therefore had become one of the most pictured and researched objects. Famous photographers like Felice Beato and John Thomson. The early Westerners’ obsession with ancient Chinese pagodas is also reflected in the design of some Western garden architectures, such as the pagoda in Kew Garden, London.

中国目前留有遗存的古塔大部分都在北方地区,年代跨度主要是从唐代到民国,其中宋代与辽金时期是古塔最多样的时期。杨淏目前已经实地考证与研究过华北地区将近200座古塔遗存,包括山西、河北等地。北京是中国“古塔”遗存相对集中的地区之一,杨淏的古塔研究也是从北京地区开始并逐渐发散。


In China, most of the remaining ancient pagodas in China are located in the northern region, spanning from the Tang Dynasty to the Republic era, with the Song Dynasty and the Liao-Jin Period being the most diverse in terms of pagoda style. Yang has conducted on-site investigations and research on nearly 200 pagodas in the Northern China region, including Shanxi province and Hebei provinces. Beijing has a relatively concentrated ancient pagoda remains. Yang started his research from Beijing where the ancient pagodas are relatively more centralized, and then gradually expanded the research to other places.

本次展览将展示杨淏对中国古代佛塔的研究和创作。总共分为三个部分,第一部分是杨淏在中国所进行的古塔实地考古研究,包括历史文献与古塔调研的展示;第二部分是古塔在中西方语境下的连接与互动,古塔如何作为一种佛教建筑形制从印度传到东亚,然后在近代又开始输出并影响到西方;第三部分是杨淏对古塔概念所做的视觉艺术呈现,在进行了古代概念的洗礼启发之后,如何以当代艺术的视角进行新的创作,古塔如何启发我们在当代进行新一轮的概念理解与延伸。


This exhibition will showcase Hao Yang’s research and artistic creations on ancient Chinese pagodas. It consists of three parts. The first part focuses on Yang’s archaeological fieldwork on ancient pagodas in China, including a display of historical literature and pagoda research. The second part explores the connections and interactions of ancient pagodas in both Chinese and Western contexts. It examines how pagodas, as a form of Buddhist architecture, spread from India to East Asia and later influenced the West. The third part presents Yang's visual artistic interpretations of the concept of ancient pagodas. Inspired by the concept, Yang explores how to recreate artistic works from the perspective of contemporary art. The exhibition aims to demonstrate how ancient pagodas inspire us to achieve a new level of conceptual understanding and extension in the contemporary era.


本次展览将结合文献、摄影、录像、绘画和书法进行多媒介艺术呈现。展览期待着向人们介绍中国古代佛塔的历史、发展和演变过程,以及佛塔在当代背景下的意义衍生。同时也期待通过古塔理念,在古代艺术和当代艺术之间,在西方和中国语境之间搭建一座沟通的桥梁,从而发现更多有趣的启迪和意涵。


This exhibition will present a multimedia art experience combining literature, photography, videos, paintings, and calligraphy. It aims to introduce the history, development and evolution of ancient Chinese pagodas, as well as the meaning of pagodas in a contemporary context. It also seeks to use the concept of ancient pagodas to bridge gaps between ancient art and contemporary art, as well as between the Western and Chinese contexts. This exhibition is hoped to bring more inspiration and meaning to the audience.







杨淏 Hao Yang


杨淏毕业于英国皇家艺术学院,英国兰卡斯特大学当代艺术博士在读。从事当代艺术实践与古代艺术收藏。运用绘画、影像与书法等进行跨媒介艺术实践。研究领域主要为西方当代艺术、东亚艺术史以及数字监控时代下的艺术感知与反叛。


Hao Yang graduated from the Royal College of Art and is currently a PhD candidate in Contemporary Art at Lancaster University. He is engaged in contemporary art practice and ancient art collection. His practice spans various media, including painting, moving image, and calligraphy. His research primarily focuses on Western contemporary art, East Asian art history, and the artistic perception and rebellion in the digital surveillance era.
