LATITUDE Gallery is exhibiting 12 works by artist Jessica Wee. The artist uses a blend of traditional Korean mulberry paper and canvas to express surreal dreams and his time with his close friends. Because of her own unique understanding of cultural identity; As well as her life in New York with her friend Seulgi, Jessica was influenced and promoted to transform her unstable life into work. These carefully portrayed intimate moments form Jessica Wee's first Solo exhibition Plusieurs Rêves. The exhibition closes on June 12.

As a diasporic Asian artist of Korean origin who has lived in Canada, France, Italy, and the U.S., Jessica has always had a complex relationship with the notion of cultural identity. Yet, her discontinued sense of “homeland” and disorientation from the clashing cultures have given her an unexpected gift, her own ways of carpe diem. As a ramification of her diasporic experience, she creates worlds consisting of different cultures and identities fragmented memories and identities where she inhabits multiple characters and places all at once.

Wee’s four-year training in Old Master oil painting in France and Italy has prepared her to include elements from western art history in the surreal dreamscapes. This work is a self-portrait of the artist as Mercury, the messenger of the gods. She tried to capture a feeling of hesitation and discomfort being in a classical pose.

In Jessica's works, we can often recognize lucky cats, fortune cookies, Korean folk masks, Korean costumes, etc., a series of familiar but exotic objects for artists. In the midst of the epidemic, even though these symbols represent positivity and good luck, the work itself also expresses the contradiction between them and the epidemic environment.

This work is created with oil paint on Korean mulberry paper glued to the canvas. Jessica modeled the folkloric creatures and domestic objects in 3D software with the help of stock images, then translated them to the traditional paper’s irregular surface.

This is the 4th painting of a series [BMS1]. Jessica wanted to paint this moment that she remembered so strongly when her friend Iris told her that borders might be closed if she went to Montreal for a weekend. And Iris was right. This picture is about Jessica being too busy on my phone to listen to all the signs around her. The woman in the top middle is a Korean folkloric mask, that she often used to represent the moon. It glows like neons in a psychic store.

The curious thing is that in many of Jessica's works, the "lucky cat" she depicts, also known as a Maneki-neko, is itself used as a decoration on cash registers in Asian stores to bring good luck to the store owners. Jessica combined it with Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland to create another understanding of the artist's own cultural identity.
