这位民国青年不仅人帅字美，还差点拿了诺贝尔奖丨夜听双语

晚上好，我是双语君。

前不久双语君在朋友圈里看到了好多民国青年。有芙蓉如面柳如眉的贵族大小姐；还有腹有诗书气自华的青年才俊。

你是温文尔雅的女学生，还是品貌非凡的留洋学子，亦或是风情万种的摩登名媛呢？

青年沈从文

说起民国青年，题图里的这位青年就是上世纪最为著名的作家之一——沈从文先生。

Shen Congwen is considered to be one of the greatest modern Chinese writers, on par with Lu Xun. Regional culture and identity plays a much bigger role in his writing than that of other major early modern Chinese writers. He was known for combining the vernacular style with classical Chinese writing techniques. Shen is the most important of the "native soil" writers in modern Chinese literature.

沈从文被视作中国最伟大的现代作家之一，与鲁迅齐名。他的作品比起其他早期的中国现代作家来说，对地方文化与认同着墨较多。此外，他也以民间风格与中国古典写作技法的结合而著名。沈从文是中国现代文学领域“乡土（文学）”作家中最重要的一位。

出生于湘西的沈从文比起民国同时期的青年才俊与大家闺秀，最多只能算是一介农夫，但凭借着质朴温暖醇厚的文学语言，他在现代文学史上有着过人的吸引力。

他的作品《边城》被《亚洲周刊》评选为“20世纪中文小说百强排行榜”的第二名，仅次于鲁迅先生的《呐喊》。他本人也在1988年获得了诺贝尔文学奖的提名。

小说《边城》迄今为止有多达四个英文译本，其中之一由著名英籍翻译家戴乃迭与丈夫杨宪益合译。值得一提的是，二位翻译家也是大名鼎鼎的民国青年哦，不信你看。

我们今天要分享的选段就来自这本清澈温厚的《边城》。

The highway running east from Sichuan to Hunan comes, just west of the border, to Chadong, a small town in the hills. Nearby a stream flows past a small pagoda, at the foot of which lives a solitary household: an old man, a girl and a dog.

由四川过湖南去，靠东有一条官路。这官路将近湘西边境到了一个地方名为“茶峒”的小山城时，有一小溪，溪边有座白色小塔，塔下住了一户单独的人家。这人家只一个老人，一个女孩子，一只黄狗。

Now the white pagoda at Green Stream is generally believed to have much to do with the favourable influences at work round Chadong. It is absolutely essential to rebuild it. Contributions are collected from the garrison headquarters, customs office, different shops and households and the big landlords on the outskirts of Chadong. In order that the building of the pagoda may not benefit a few individuals only, everyone is given a chance to accumulate merit by subscribing; and so the new ferryboat carries a bamboo tube with a slot in the middle through which anyone who wishes can put in money. 

碧溪岨的白塔，与茶峒风水有关系，塔圮坍了，不重新作一个自然不成。除了城中营管，税局以及各商号各平民捐了些钱以外，各大寨子也有人拿册子去捐钱。为了这塔成就并不是给谁一个人的好处，应尽每个人来积德造福，尽每个人皆有捐钱的机会，因此在渡船上也放了个两头有节的大竹筒，中部锯了一口，尽过渡人自由把钱投进去。

When it is filled the groom takes it to the authorities in town and brings back another. Passers-by who see the old ferryman has vanished, while Emerald is wearing a white mourning ribbon in her hair, know the old man, his task done, is lying at rest in the earth as food for the worms. With sympathetic glances at the girl, they put money into the bamboo tube, murmuring, “Heaven preserve you! The dead has gone to the Western Paradise. Peace be with the living!” Emerald's heart is touched and pained by their pity, and she turns quickly away to pull the boat.

竹筒满了马兵就捎进城中首事人处去，另外又带了个竹筒回来。过渡人一看老船夫不见了，翠翠辫子上扎了白线，就明白那老的已作完了自己分上的工作，安安静静躺到土坑里给小蛆吃掉了，必一面用同情的眼色瞧着翠翠，一面就摸出钱来塞到竹筒中去。“天保佑你，死了的到西方去，活下的永保平安。”翠翠明白那些捐钱人的怜悯与同情意思，心里酸酸的，忙把身子背过去拉船。

When winter comes a new white pagoda is completed. But the young man whose serenading in the moonlight made Emerald's heart soar up lightly in her dreams has not come back to Chadong.

可是到了冬天，那个圮坍了的白塔，又重新修好了。那个在月下唱歌，使翠翠在睡梦里为歌声把灵魂轻轻浮起的年青人，还不曾回到茶峒来。

He may never come back. Or he may come back tomorrow.

这个人也许永远不回来了，也许“明天”回来！
