untitled: lipchitzplinth2013 is Phyllida Barlow's tribute to French cubist sculptor Jacques Lipschitz, in which a small sculpture is supported by a wooden base. The kink shape of the sculpture seems to echo Lipschitz's synthetic sculptures that construct figures through abstract lines and volumes, while its surface was painted in Barlow's typical vibrant hues.
Phyllida Barlow produces sculptures inspired by the urban environment, often combining non-traditional materials, such as cardboard, plywood, plaster, and cement, with vividly coloured paints and fabrics. Since gaps remain in the stitching between the materials, the production process is preserved, resulting in a large-scale but not monumental sculpture. These sizeable works challenge the viewer’s experience of physical space, frequently presenting a balanced form of tension and breaking through the limitations of volume and height in the act of towering, blocking, and interrupting space. In consequence, the viewer’s experience transcends the object and accommodates a wider field.
