Yang Jingyu Sacrificing His Life for the Anti-Japanese Cause

Yang Jingyu was born in Queshan County, Henan Province. He joined the Communist Youth League of China in 1926. The next year, he was elected chairman of Queshan Peasant Association and joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in May that same year. Serving as the commander in chief of the peasant revolution in Queshan County, he led the Queshan peasant uprising. In 1929, he was dispatched to Northeast China by the Party Committee, and successively served as Secretary of CPC Fushun Special Branch, Secretary of Harbin Party Committee, Independent Division Commander and Political Commissar of the First Legion of Northeast People’s Revolutionary Army, etc. In 1934, he served as Commander in Chief of South Manchuria Anti-Japanese United Army, and commander and commissar of the First Legion of the Northeast People’s Revolutionary Army. In 1936, he led the troops to wage the guerrilla war against Japanese invaders, dealing them with severe strikes. In the winter of 1938, he led a section of the First Route Army into the dense forests of Changbai Mountain and fought in extreme hardship. In February 1940, Yang heroically gave his life to the anti-Japanese cause because traitors despicably informed against him.

In the spring of 1939, Yang, together with Wei Zhengmin, led the First Route Army to wipe out the puppet forest police near Muji River in Huadian area. In May, their troops captured Dapuchaihe, an important town in the south of Dunhua County. According to recently discovered historical materials, Yang once borrowed 800 silver dollars from Lin Yanwen, a local patriot, and left behind a contract for the loan. The contract says Yang Jingyu borrowed the money in preparing military materials for fighting Japan and he promised that the soviet government would repay it with 30% interest after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War. However, considering the government’s economic difficulties, Lin Yanwen didn’t ask for the money; instead, he told his son before his death, “Don’t ask the debt from government, and keep the contract only as a souvenir.”

In June, the troops led by Yang attacked Dabaoshan Copper Mine in Antu County, an important industrial and mining base of the enemy, forcing it to suspend production for one year. In September, the Japanese Guangdong Army mobilized massive 75,000 well-equipped troops to carry out large-scale “suppression actions” against the First Route Army of Anti-Japanese Union in Tonghua, Jiandao, Jilin and other areas. Although Yang successfully led his troops to break out of Linjiang, the soldiers were in no supply of food and clothing in winter, but they had to fight against the enemies in temperatures below minus thirty or forty degrees. In order to preserve their strength and avoid greater losses, Yang and Wei decided to break up the troops into smaller units to conduct guerrilla wars.

Yang Jingyu, with his troops, achieved the victory of killing more than 100 enemy fighters in Mengjiang County. However, the troops were surrounded since the activities of the troops were tracked because of a traitor. Yang led a group to deal with the enemies, and they had more than 40 fights within about 50 days, yet they remained surrounded; eventually, the last six soldiers following him sacrificed their lives one after another. On Feb 23, 1940, Yang fought alone a fierce battle with the enemy in the forest of Bao’an Village. After Yang’s death, the brutal Japanese invaders dissected his body and found not a grain but bark, grass roots and cotton in his stomach.

Yang’s stories are always on the lips of local people in Northeast China. Since the founding of new China, Yang has been praised with songs, some go chanting as “Changbai Mountain is white as silver; forests of pine trees stand in the silver mountain; the pine trees are countless, just like Yang Jingyu’s ever-lasting heroic stories”.
