It is an undisputable fact that dogs are human's best friend and their unconditional love often surpasses our imaginations. This year in February, frontline medical staff were busy treating patients at Taikang hospital in Dongxihu District of Wuhan City, they noticed a dog sitting on the floor of the hospital's lobby, patiently waiting for his human companion to return. Sadly, the man didn't make it.
"The dog may think that the owner is still in the hospital, so he doesn't want to leave." Zhu Youzhen said, she added that hospital staff and patients knew the story of the dog and were feeding the pining pooch. Under care of the hospital cleaning and medical staff, the dog stayed in the hospital for a little more than three months, searching for his owner everywhere in the hospital.

Hospital staff took turns to feed the dog during the difficult time. Fortunately, the owner of a supermarket near the hospital decided to offer the dog a temporary shelter, not knowing its name, they named it "Xiaobao," meaning "Little Treasure." Afterwards, a nurse published Xiaobao's story on Douyin, calling him the "Wuhan Version of Hachiko."

Hachiko was a dog known for his infinite fidelity and love for his owner, Eizaburo Ueno, a university professor in Tokyo, Japan. Every afternoon, Hachiko (stylized as Hachikō in Japanese) waited at the Shibuya train station until his owner returned from work - even after his tragic sudden death.

Hospital cleaner, Zhu Youzhen, remembers that the first time she saw this dog was in February.
That was the time when Covid-19 hit Wuhan the most but the 65-year-old Zhu Youzhen stayed at Taikang Hospital in Dongxihu District and continued to do cleaning work.
At the beginning, the dog was afraid of people and only wandered outside the outpatient building of the hospital and dared not come inside.
"I had never seen this dog before the outbreak," Zhu Youzhen said, adding that she learned from the hospital staff that the owner of the dog is a pensioner. He was sent to the hospital for treatment after suffering Covid-19, and the dog accompanied him to the hospital. The owner's condition was serious, and unfortunately passed away within 5 days, but the dog stayed in the hospital.
Wu Cuifen loves dogs and raises a golden retriever herself. She runs a supermarket near the hospital. After hearing the story of this dog she was moved and she lurred the dog to the supermarket with ham sausage and she feeds him every day. Slowly, the dog got acquainted with her.
Her own dog is called "An Bao", and so not knowing this dog's name, she named it "Xiaobao" meaning "Little Treasure". Hospital medical staff often visit Xiaobao in her supermarket and buys her treats such as ham sausages.
But due to her responsibilities, she can not keep her, another person living in Hanyang saw the news and went to the hospital to adopt Xiaobao. But Xiaobao could not get used to the new environment, she refused to eat and drink, he had to return Xiaobao to the hospital.
Since the hospital is returning to normal operations, patients can't stand to see a dog roaming inside the hospital. On May 20th, hospital staff contacted volunteers from the Wuhan Small Animal Protection Association. The volunteers went to Taikang Hospital and interracted with Xiaobao for about half an hour and he was willing to go with them.
"After spending such a long time with Xiaobao, of course I can't bear it, but I wish for it to always have a good home." Wu Cuifen said.
The volunteers sent Xiaobao to the pet hospital for a physical examination and sterilization. A number of people have already applied to adopt Xiaobao and the facility is now vetting the potential new owner.
