Take a Test of Courage in Japanese Transparent Public Toilets

Normally, privacy is required when going to the toilet, right? A “transparent toilet” appeared in a park in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan. The reason why this toilet has a transparent design is that public toilets at night are prone to dead ends, but as long as the door is locked, the electronically controlled liquid crystal glass will become opaque.

The use of this design is to prevent criminals from hiding in the toilet cubicle and assaulting passers-by who come in to go to the toilet when the night is small and dim. Passers-by can also see the situation inside to avoid danger.

The principle is that electronically controlled liquid crystal glass is used in the toilet, and the glass interlayer is covered with liquid crystal molecules. When it is energized, the arrangement of the liquid crystal molecules will be changed to allow light to pass through.

If the power is cut off, the liquid crystal molecules will revert to irregular arrangements, the incident light will be scattered, and the glass will become opaque.

However, there are some people posing the question--"what happens if the device malfunctions?" --which is a very important question.

This is not the first time Japan has introduced transparent toilets that can turn opaque while in use.

Back in 2014, Oita city introduced transparent toilets which turn opaque when the sensors detect motions.

However, these toilets often lose their opacity at untimely moments, Kotaku reported.

The sensors could not detect movement for 35 seconds and the toilet turned transparent while the user is still inside.
