As the fall semester began this September, there were still many students who were forced to delay reporting to school due to the pandemic outbreaks in some regions.
Schools were forced to take initiatives to ensure that students around China get back to schools safely and most have returned to school as we speak.
But, when Gao Shuailing, a sophomore student at Lanzhou Institute of Information Technology from Tianshui, was given a green-light to return to school, he was facing another real-life reality—he couldn't afford to pay tuition fees.
His hometown is famous for producing "Huaniu" apples, however due to the overproduction this year, his family didn't sell much to support his studies and living expenses at the university.

Upon learning about his situation, the school administration made a plan to help him with the burden of tuition fees.
They asked him to bring all the apples to the school, and so he brought with him 100 boxes of apples to register for a new semester.
Desperate, confused and not even knowing what plan the school had for thousands of apples he will be bringing back to school, little did he know that the school had a not-so-secret (among school staff) plan of recommending his apples to school staff.
When school staff learned that he had arrived, they flocked to invite him back to school and bought all the apples he brought with him within a few moment.
Staff at the school said that Lanzhou Institute of Information Technology fully supports education and knowledge-based initiatives set towards poverty alleviation and support students' innovation and entrepreneurship.

The school has a series of subsidy policies to cultivate and educate students with financial difficulties, encourage them to innovate and invest in education.
The school is also investing on resources to help students and encourage them not to drop out of school because of economic difficulties.
"I really didn't expect the school will help me sell all these apples, which in return reduced the pressure on my family to pay for tuition fees." Gao said.
"Through this, I also learned how to help others. I will study hard and make better contributions to the society" he added.
