Delivery Person Hailed for Saving a Family of Three from Fire

Fire broke out on the 3rd floor apartment in a residential community building in Jianghan district, Wuhan city, Hubei province this December 10. At the time, a Shunfeng express delivery person, Zhangyu, was passing by when he saw smoke coming out of the balcony and climbed up to the second floor, saving a family of three from the fire.

He told residents of the apartment upstairs to pass the child to him. Two adults carried a little girl and passed her to him, as he was hanging by the balcony of the second floor with one hand.
He used the other hand to bring the little girl in the apartment on the second floor. Community property staff also joined Zhangyu on the rescue.
"I was downstairs collecting an express package from a resident. As the fire broke out, residents gathered on the ground preparing blankets to help catch the victims if they jump from the third floor, but I thought it's too dangerous so an idea came into my mind-- climb up to catch them."
"I only had one thought in my mind at the time, bring the family to safety."
Zhangyu, 36 years old from Luotian, Hubei province, is working as a delivery person for a Tangjiadun Business Department of Shunfeng Express. He told reporters that he had served in the armed police force for two years.
"I received unassisted climbing training at the time, so when this incident happened I tried to climb to the second floor and help bring the victims to safety."
He said there were no people on the apartment at the second floor, but fortunately the balcony window was unlocked, he opened the window and stood on the windowsill.
He saved a 2 years old girl first and helped two adults climb safely into the residents' home on the second floor.
"It's this brother, a hero! A true Hero! Please don't put on your mask, let's take a picture of the hero's face!" Residents of the community were heard saying after the rescue. They praised him for his skills and selflessness.
As of press time, the fire had been extinguished and the cause of the accident is still under further investigation.
This afternoon, the head of the publicity department of Wuhan firefighting department presented Zhangyu with the honorary certificate of "Wuhan Excellent Fire Fighting Volunteer" and the commemorative medal of "Fire Warrior".
