Discover the Charm of Silk

On March 10, the MCS field trip to the China National Silk Museum was held successfully. More than 30 international students from ZIBS visited the museum and experienced the traditional tie-dye technique.

I had an opportunity to join the C-Walk day trip to the China National Silk Museum in Hangzhou with other international students. It was a great chance to get to know each other better and create good memories together. I especially liked the tie-dye experience- it was fun, and we could also create a unique souvenir to keep with us for a long time. I hope there will be more C-walks that enable us to experience Chinese culture.

I had fun visiting the Silk Museum in Hangzhou with ZIBSers! We had the chance to experience a traditional tie-dye activity after our guide took us to visit the museum's halls. We saw a lot of fascinating ancient silk outfits, some worn by empresses. We also learned about the fabrication of silk, from the silkworms to the techniques used, which I found very interesting. Lastly, I enjoyed seeing many contemporary designers’ versions of traditional Chinese outfits. It was definitely a memorable visit!

First, we explored the different exhibits in the museum, which showcased the various stages of silk production, from silkworm breeding to silk weaving. The museum had an impressive collection of ancient silk textiles, including intricate embroidery and luxurious silk garments worn by emperors and nobles in ancient China. We also saw how silk production has evolved over time, with modern techniques and machinery being used to produce silk on a large scale.

Besides, the tie-dye workshop is a fun and interactive way to learn more about the art of silk production and create a personalized souvenir to take home. It's a great activity for anyone looking for a hands-on experience at the museum.

Overall, our trip to the National Silk Museum was an enriching and educational experience. It was amazing to see firsthand how silk, a material that we often take for granted, has played such a significant role in China's history and culture. As a China Studies student, the trip gave me a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship and artistry behind silk production, and I left feeling inspired and motivated to incorporate this knowledge into my future studies and learn more about the country.

One of the highlights of my trip was the opportunity to tie-dye my own silk scarf. The staff provided us with expert guidance and made the experience enjoyable for everyone. It was amazing to see how the dye reacted with the silk, creating a stunning pattern that was unique to my scarf.

Apart from the hands-on activities, the museum's collection of silk clothing from different times was simply breathtaking. I was able to see some of the most beautiful pieces of clothing that I have ever laid eyes on. The sheer range of fabrics and styles on display was impressive, and I was surprised to learn about the history behind each piece.

One of my favorite parts of the museum was the exhibition of imperial silk robes. These were the robes that the Chinese emperors used to wear, and they were incredibly ornate and beautiful. The intricate designs and attention to detail were simply stunning, and I was in awe of the craftsmanship that went into each piece.

The museum was also very informative about the silk-making process. It was fascinating to learn about how the silk worms are bred, the silk extraction process, and the various stages of silk production. I gained a new appreciation for the amount of effort and skill that goes into creating each piece of silk.

Overall, my experience at the National Silk Museum in China was exceptional. The staff were knowledgeable and friendly, and the exhibits were informative and visually stunning. I highly recommend this museum to anyone interested in learning more about the history of silk and seeing some of the most beautiful pieces of clothing in the world.
