After finishing his career as a Professor Emeritus at KULeuven (2006), Jose Lambert continued active teaching in Brazil (2011-2020: UFSC and UFC), since the midseventies he has also functioned in many countries as a visiting professor and rescarcher (Amsterdam, Paris-Sorbonne (three times), Namur, Univ. of Pennsylvania), New York (NYU), Edmonton, Gottingen, South-Afica. His career has always combined organizational functions with interdiscinlinary reseach and methodologv. He was the European Secretary of ICLA and FILLM (1985-1991), the Founding Vice-President of both the Societe Belge de Litterature Generale et Comparee and the European Society for Translation Studies (1992). But he is mainly known as one of the fathers of TS (Translation Studies), first with James S Holmes and Gideon Toury (since Leuven 1976) (in a group including Even-Zohar, Bassnet, Lefevere. vanden Broeck, Van Gorp). These were the founding years of the new discipline TS, when Target (John Benjamins) and several other publications were created, as well as the European Society for TS (EST) and CETRA (it trained almost 1000 scholars on 5 continents). Together with his research options, Lambet's work moved between CL and TS, -and beyond, While first exploring French, German, romantic traditions, he moved more and more into Internationalization where he revised the too narrow Source/Target dilemma. He insisted on Interrnationalization and Interdisciplinarity together with pioneers like Anthony Pym, Michael Cronin, Yves Gambier, and Daniel Gile. Franz Pochhacker, Christina Schaffaer). 讲座简介
It is my intention to ask questions about Shakespeare in mine and your culture on the basis of my European experiences, which is delicate. Then I shall move into different, more contemporary cases. On the basis of a few cases, I shall try to look for the basic reasons why World Literature is such a hot topic nowadays, probably more in China and Asia (or Africa) than in “the West” (the USA etc. is a different story).
Then I shall try to formulate rules that help us to understand why our modern world is so fascinated by World Literature. This sounds like an exploration in Literary Studies and Comparative Literature.
One of the difficulties is that it will be hard to get into the matter without devoting time and attention to translation/translated literature. At the beginning of the 19th Century, Goethe was already aware of that. A large group (a “wing”) among the contemporary comparatists were not, until a few years ago. We’ll see why.
As a way of preparing our discussion, I try to explain what we have learned from our European Shakespeares.
